I've just been invited to a MonaVie Tasting party with that old familiar "No, it's nothing like AmWay" spiel. My research tells me its an MLM scam, but there seems to be some benefit associated with the Acai juice that might possibly benefit my wife's joint pains. Has anyone had any personal experience with this or other Acai juice products?

Thanks!!

I occasionally order an Acai bowl at the local Juice place and I don't know if it does me any good but it makes a pretty good breakfast with the bananas and granola. It tart and tastes like purple. I use it to counteract the bacon I will be having for lunch.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

Thanks, Raw & Ross. I'm not planning on getting hooked into any MLM game, but some foods can help. So, I guess I'm more curious about the Acai than the MonaVie con.

Thanks, guys.

There is a guy named Dr. Alexander Schauss who happens to be one of the foremost authorities on anti-oxidants. Might be interesting to read his thougths as he is more qualified than any one here on the Café regarding the subject.

Sounds like Dr. Alexander Schauss is the guy who 'discovered' the Acai fruit.

Cut and pasted from a pro-Acai site:

--- Start of cut and paste ---

From Dr. Alex Schauss's brilliant book on the berry, Açai (Euterpe oleracea): The Nutritional and Antioxidant-Rich Amazonian Palm Tree Fruit:

"Some years ago I was the first scientist to determine the antioxidant activity of acai fruit using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. This assay and others allowed me to discover that Açai had unusually high antioxidant and scavenging activity in vitro against hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, and superoxide anion free radicals, compared to all of the common fruits and vegetables consumed in the United States.

"The results were so striking in comparison to other food sources of antioxidants that we ultimately determined how to preserve this antioxidant activity so that the fruit could be exported in a form that would retain its benefits."

--- End of cut and paste ---

Apparently Schuess has studied the effects of MonoVie. See these links for instance:

http://www.aibmr.com/outcomes.html

http://www.aibmr.com/monavie.pdf

The MonoVie site advertises the above, but note that the results from the study are limited and based on very small samples. And the research apparently has yet to be peer-reviewed or published in a scientific journal. Let alone a refereed one.

I am actually starting to wonder whether or not Schauss might have a financial stake in the product, although that may just be me being cynical ...

(Day ??? What do I do now ???)

It may not be relevant, but unless I am mistaken Dr. Alexander Schauss obtained his Ph.D. in a non-medical field from a distance learning university. He's very energetic, accomplished, productive, and skilled at self-promotion, no doubt about that, but I can't actually figure out what his formal medical credentials are. As far as I can tell, he has none. Notably, his biography omits any mention of serious medical study. Or whether any of his work has ever been refereed. Strange omissions for a man of science.

Actually, I see just now that he is listed on the "quackwatch" database:

Oh, and this site

http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/sum......5625_ITM

indicates that he has misrepresented his background and some of his achievements in his curriculum vitae.
