Central Europe is slowly warming up to the idea of Springtime. We´ve packed up the waggon, headed across Germany, and are starting to play our way up the Rhein. With good weather and healthy tires, we hope to cross into Switzerland in about two months time. Are Swiss cities requiring permissions? Are there any hang-ups? What are the feelings on the pedestrian-zones right now, with the cities?
Thanks for the thoughts, gallgher |

Hi Gallgher
Ask Hörbi from http://www.zauberladen.com from Zürich, he is a student from Cellini and has a heart for buskers. Time is changing and the rules is diffrent from city to city. Zürich, Bern, Luzern, Thun and many other should be good, but try. Some places you cant work anymore others are open. Plus there are a few Festivals. Lenzburger Gauklerfestival Gauklerfestival Frick Theaterspektakel Zürich ( I think is not that easy to work anymore) Bludenz has a Streetfestival ( Austria) and a few others. But ask Hörbi ( and buy something!!!!) Cheers Shorty |

Oh for cryin' out loud! Supressing the free expression of buskers is supposed to be America's job! Europe is supposed to be where it's more open and free! What are you people doing over there?

Hey Shorty, Thanks. Funny, I spent a good part of last summer, sharing towns with a `Shorty´, in the most northern parts of Germany. Now, as I´m heading south, and got this tip from you; I thought,`Geeze, he´s one step ahead of me again!´
Thanks for the tips, see ya this summer, gallagher P.S.: Hey Mandrake, look at it more as `organizational concern´. They only want the best for us! ,...and think of the folks it employs! ciao brother |

When I was over there last summer, it was basically impossible to busk unless you had an EU passport. This was true in Germany and Switzerland. I hear it is the same in other EU countries as well.

A little town,.. with a BIG winefest. Was really nice. Super people! Had Cellini in my crowd, twice. He lives about twelve kilometers from there. Kind of funny,.. I asked if he was waiting for the pitch!! I'm back in Germany right now, have a couple of gigs,.. but I'll be back!! I'll let you know when and where I'm coming. Be nice to see ya.

So, how did the Neiderdorf go?
I lived and busked in Luzern, Switzerland for a few years during the legendary early 1990's when everything was legal. I went back a few times since but noticed it was swamped. I met several Peruvians (guys in the black hats) and even bought an audio tape from their band. Then, I went over to Geneva and ran into another S. American busker band. I liked their music and bought a tape from them. When I got back to Luzern, I popped it in the player and it was the same tape! Ha ha!

Gallagher,
Write more on your encounter with Cellini please! Sorry to stalk you from forum to forum...but I'm really interested in knowing about how he's doing. Is he still into magic? Does he perform, write, teach??? |

Hey Guys, you're right about Switzerland,.. it had been REALLY over played. But now it's `regulated'. Not all so bad, though. When you take the time to get the permission (in some towns you must go to THREE different officials!) it's OK. Some places are totally forbidden. Downtown Zurich, for example. And tightly controlled. Experience. The real stickler, in `the Schweiz' though, is trying to find a parking spot! Wow!! ,.... the folks, though, seen to be a really `educated' audience. Very polite. Very thoughtful. Seem to have a bit of time on their hands. This is a sign of `true wealth', in my book.
... saying that, I'm in Germany right now, the `Ruhr Gebiet'. Very, hmmmm,.. `Industrial'. Phew,... can be hard! Nice parking though! take care guys, keep it warm. gallagher |

I found a Hall of Mirrors in Luzern that's not to be missed. If you'd like to see the power of mirrors sans smoke, this is the place. I was able to get there early one Sunday and film inside when nobody was around. It's worth every Swiss Franc...

Met him on the Niederdorf in Zurich, 1992 I believe. He was a magician, and I was a musician. Seemed like a nice guy...told me his situation...I laughed my head off. Let's just say every time I see his pic with "King of the Street Performers" on it, I have to chuckle...

Hey Zoobini,
Nice story. You're really right, most of us over here "missed it" that Cellini hit the `Big Time'! It's kind of funny; before, he was just another guy to share a town with. Most Magicians didn't take much notice of him either...funny how things turn. A funnier one is "The Kelly Family". Ever fight for a pitch with them? They played Colonge a lot. They were really hard on other performers. They were working with a bunch of "really sweet little kids". No one had a chance against them. They'd set up right next to you and blow you away. Then, they hit it big. The REAL `Big Time'. ,... No one who played with them on the streets could believe it! Thank god...it got `em off the Streets! The Streets are great, eh? You never know who you could be sharing the corner with! Keep warm, gallagher |

Hey man...What up?
Story? That was just a teaser... The Kelly Family sounded very ego-driven. As a muse, I almost never did walk-by shows in Europe anyway. I must have met Cellini before he found the magic shop. I also met Gazzo but had nothing in common with either other than just being buskers. As we know, it rains and rains in the Schweitz in the summer...then it rains some more...sometimes for weeks. I read where they got tired of all the Peruvians and now require a European passport...the Police always asking you for your papers...ha ha...Once, I told them my passport was in my trailer I had been given. The Police said, "Okay, we go to the trailer." I said, "Lets go." He thought about it for a moment and said, "It's okay. You are free to go." I said, "I know. I'm free to stay, too." Yeah, I was cocky making all that money...but I've never put down another busker which seemed to be common with others. I usually went up and introduced myself...which is how I met Cellini and Gazzo. To me, busking is all about your energy...

Hey Zoobini,
"Magic Shop"?,.. are you talking about Ingo Magino, by any chance? What were you playing in Zurich, at the time? Is it possible we know each other?!? I was hanging out in Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Freiburg;... pushing a Piano, doing Magic between songs. Used to cross into Zurich every now and then, on weekends. Do you read German?,... a book came out this summer, documenting that time pretty well. Let me know, I'll send it. Hey,.. tell your Cellini story. p.s.: the South Americans are still here. They dressed as American Indians, now; with feathers in the hair, and the whole works. The dance around going, "Woow. Woow. Woow. Woow." It looks pretty stupid, but,... you guessed it,.. they get their crowds!,.... gallagher |

I ran into the South Americans in Vienna one summer, right in front of St. Stephen's. Then I ran into them in the Netherlands at a flea market the next year. They get around.
My wife and I spent about a week in Zürich, Spring of 2007. We used it as a base of operations while we explored Switzerland. One afternoon, we went to Baden, which is where Cellini lives now. Cellini was in bad shape. He was on crutches. Marianne was delightful, though. We worked together a couple of weeks at Scarborough Faire in Texas about a decade and a half ago. I worry about Jim a lot.
