I've always thought that whatever poet coined Montana's Big Sky Country deserves an award. If you've never seen the prairie sky, you are missing one of the true wonders of the world.
Any other favourites? John

North Carolina's "First in Flight" which won out unanimously over "Dang, Boys, Look at all them Bluecoats!" (That there's Nawth'n humor, son; I say, Nawth'n humor.)

I think it was just rude of Manitoba to put "100,000 lakes" on their plates, even if it is true.

There's Alaska's "The Last Frontier"
It's a lot better than California's, which just says "California". It should say something about when California became a state, like the fact that it had no electricity, no money, almost everyone spoke Spanish, and there were gunfights in the streets. Or, they could talk about what California is like today, like the fact that it has no electricity, no money, almost everyone speaks Spanish, and there are gunfights in the streets. |

Check out Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana very interesting radio ads in Minnesota last winter about ski parties and Montana cowboys three pair of jeans - a size too big, the right size for rodeo and a size too small for a good party.

In Iowa, we have the county name on them, so you can tell which county anyone comes from.
Some of them seem like weird names for Iowa, like Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, and Palo Alto, which have always sounded like California to me. Iowa county plates say 'Iowa' twice, once for the state and once for the county. The county is actually named for the Kiowa Indians, just as the state is. (I don't know why the 'K' got dropped.) There are a bunch of Indians: Cherokee, Chickasaw, Pottawattamie, and such, as well as individuals like Black Hawk, Keokuk, and Osceola. If you own a Plymouth and live in Plymouth county, you're in luck. By the way, heres a bit of trivia: the plates that say 'Des Moines' are for Des Moines county, which is in the Southeast corner of the state where the city of Burlington is located. The city of Des Moines is located in the center of the state in Polk county. We've got all of the early dead presidents, of course: Washington, Jefferson, Adams (only one of them), Madison (maybe you've heard of the 'Bridges of Madison County'? - they're here in Iowa), etc. Evey one through Taylor, which is when the state was admitted to the Union. For eight years, the people in Clinton county drove around with plates with the name of the president on them; the Republicans in that county actually tried to get the license plate design changed so they'd get his name off their cars. The #1 slogan that people would like to see on Iowa plates if we got rid of the county names? "Is this Heaven?"

Years ago, Quebec's plates read La Bell Province (The beautiful province). When the separatists were elected in the late 70s, they changed the plates to read Je me souviens (I will remember). This prompted some people to mount the new plate on top of the old one so that they got the double motto Je me souviens la belle province.
