Just wanted to get some input on this label "Bizarre".
Some effects that I do lend themselves to a very dark presentation, most are inspired from mythology, folktales and just my imagination. Does it "the label Bizarre " have a clear definition? Something like "Blood & Guts" Death and Dismemberment? I see lots of talk on the web about Blood & Guts, then I see people like Eugene Burger doing these wonderful stories, some dark some not so dark. Most contain an element of humor. Am I making too much out of a label or does it matter to the folks that want to be labeled as such? What motivates you to do "Bizarre" magic? Looking forward to the input. Thanks Slán Warren Just a story teller

What a good question. Exactly what is Bizzar? My impression of the Bizzar magicians would haft to be any one using magic or mentalism in a way other than popularlized. this results in maybe a theatrical use of patter or just making magic seem more than slight of hand or something more than just a trick.(not to say that the non bizzar magic isn't entertaining.) Any way I hope that helps any one with questions.
What's on your mind?

Zodiac,
Well I do try to make the pieces more theatrical. But I don't make a claim that I have dark demonic powers. I would rather leave the impression that I may not be doing "trick", but rather have the ability to change reality. But then I follow a dark piece with a light "trick". Just to change the pace and give the audience time to prepare for another dark piece... Regards The Last Doctor. ?Who?

Does it "the label Bizarre " have a clear definition? There was a recent discussion regarding this topic on another list... I think the general consensus is that "Bizarre Magic(k)" refers to magic where the emphasis is on the story, not the trick itself. Personally, I prefer the term "Storytelling Magic" as it seems more accurately descriptive of what many "Bizarrists" do.

I totally agree with Philemon: "Storytelling Magic" is the right term for Bizarre Magic. IMHO, magic should be something more than just a trick.

As I say in my current lecture notes, Bizarre Magic, the term probably has as many definitions as it does practitioners.
Everything from storytelling to gore. But in every case there is a common thread: It is magic that touches the audience on a new emotional level. It's not just doing "tricks"; it is creating a magical experience. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

It's easier for me to tell stories and to just do a trick while saying watch this and now it's going to do this... sort of thing. Some things I do are very dark and brooding with themes from ancient Irish history (war and death fun? ). While other pieces appear dark, end on an upbeat. Thanks again. Again Peter, you've brought clarity to the table. "Dermot, his eyes wide".
It seems to me that we as humans are constructed of metaphor. This reality only make "sense" when we connect with it on an emotional level. Whether it's dark or light, depends where you're standing in the dimly lit room. This is becoming clearer for me everyday. After watching 3 nights of "Worlds Greatest Magic", I've discovered more of the answer for me. Magic for me needs to be intimate. I need to connect with it on a human level. Now, that's not to say that other people don't connect with spectacular magic, and mind blowing ability and straight exposition, but for me I connect with the story. The why the world looks this way or that. Oh well, there I go again. Thanks for the input. Slán ( sort of goodbye in Irish) The Last Doctor!
