One night, after I had their "free selection" returned to the deck, I noticed that my force card was on the bottom. I had apparently missed the force (not sure how I pulled that off, hasn't happened before or since). I play it cool though, intending to cull it and do card to wallet or some such effect. I place a card on the table, and ask them to name theirs, a similar gag as the one mentioned to provide misdirection. I should point out here that I use two different cards for Chicago Surprise. That way, if I'm performing at a table nearby one I just did, they don't start to think it's the same one every time. Turns out, the card that was selected was the one they didn't pick in the previous effect and was peeking out of my breast pocket. Another time, I was going into Barrie Richardson's ACAAN and handed the deck to the spectator to find their card. Well, I guess I hadn't fully reset the deck after doing Triumph earlier. (See where this is going?) The card they mentally selected was the only one reversed in the pack. (I have since found a way to make this work 1:3 times.) It's these wonderful gaffes that give birth to new effects and fish stories that further our reputations as miracle workers. |

I tried this a few times with some success. If none of the cards in the box are named...and I won't go into detail here... Do an jazzed ACR with the card ending in in the card box as below. Or... I'll go through the deck and say that the card isn't there. Control the named card to top. I'll then do a card to box I learned from "The Magic of Michael Ammar". Shake the box and the cards inside rattle. Appear to remove the named card. I also considered using 2 double-facers to increase the odds, but decided against it. This might actually be useful if you need to introduce such a card to the deck for another effect. |

Plant a double-backer in the box and you can have any card, named, signed, or whatever, appear in the box. It would require a DL on the deck after removing the card from the box, but it still plays strong.

Thanks for the replies, but please don't turn this into an escalating stat fest. Thanks to Doyley, who liked my gag! With my work, I think it is important to maintain the relationship of "the funny magic fella" entertaining an audience, RATHER than "trickster making a fool of everybody" vs. audience. People will just want to diffuse your effects, so any further attempt at misdirection is futile as they all want to catch you out! I just hope that my momentary look of shock didn't give anything away. I'm pretty sure that they were always staring at the card!

Well, sometimes you just write things off to fate. But since we are in the business of producing so-called miracles, it's not unreasonable that some of us would notice such an instance and wonder how we can guarantee it's happening again on command. Part of the game we play. Magicians can't really fly, but we've gone to some extremes to create the appearance that we can. Perhaps we believe more in the science of what we do instead of the essence of what it stands for.

Remove any card from the deck. What are the odds that a spectator will choose that card? It is one in 52. It doesn't matter what the chosen card is.
Now if you removed one card from one deck and someone else removed a card from another deck, the odds are 52 times 52. The odds of three random cards being "predicted is" 52 (the number of choices for the first card) times 51 (the number of choices remaining) times 50 (the number of choices remaining after two cards are chosen). These three cards could have been chosen in 6 different orders (3 choices for the first card, two choices for the second card, and one choice for the third card). So 52x51x50 gives you all of the possible choices (permutations). Divide this by 6 to get the number of combinations.

You have 2 outcomes. Either you hit or you don't. So it's 50/50.

If you're using a one-way force deck, the chance of them correctly naming any card that they choose is 100%...assuming that the force card is a 52-on-1 card.

Had a card that was missing; do not know why. Lady at a condo party picked that card. Wow, you picked the one card not in the deck! She kept coming up to me and saying, "So, where is my card?" I just shrugged.
I finished working the party. I noticed that their name tags had their Condo number on it. I went to my car, got another deck of cards, found the missing card, went to her door, and slide it under the door with enough force to land it perfectly into the center of her hall. Got a call from the booker telling me about this lady I totally freaked out. She still can't figure out how I did it, nor how I got into her house. I told her it was magic....

@ Bad --> HA!!!! Mate, I am killing myself laughing over here in Aussie. I think you'll probably hear me over there in Florida. That is a great story, and I wish I could have seen that lady's face.
@Daffy--> That is the exact philosophy that I too possess. Blessings like that come once in a blue moon, so make the most of it! Who is any the wiser if you take credit? Keep the stories coming, people! I am loving them!

She opened up a (still sealed) bill and, lo and behold, there was the card with her name and picture. She always talked about the "miracle" to anyone who would listen, and she kept that card until the day she died. It was that special. Sometimes, the magic is just real....

That is a very poignant story, Daffy. I only wish that I will someday experience something that meaningful. Very true that magic sometimes really gets a tad too real. Don't hear me complaining, though.
Thanks for the story, mate!

I once did around 30 minutes in the oddest circumstances. I won't go into explanations why, but I ended up performing close-up for a small queue to buy season tickets for a football club at 3 in the morning with cars pulled up to provide headlights. The first two people who picked a card, picked the same card (6 of hearts) which happened to be the same as a full deck I had. I got to let them handle the deck, then switched it for my full deck of 6 of hearts. For another 25 minutes, I had people pick cards, ambitious card, etc., then switched back with everyone amazed they couldn't pick anything other than 6 of hearts out of an "inspected deck".
