Have you ever decided to change your market and go after a new area altogether?
What made you do that? I ask because I am moving away from birthdays (still doing them but not seeking them) and moving to more family venues (fairs, picnics etc) and have found a surpisingly good reaction.

I constantly sway back and forth between performing for Church audiences and Children shows. I love them both.

1) Many times in my career...
2) Almost always a 'personal growth' consideration. Sure, sometimes is a natural progression, but in that example of moving from Theme arks and Cruise Ship in to the Casino Markets it was a PERSONAL preference to stay in one area for an extended period of time and LESS about the "career path" though the choice didn’t "hurt" - Hehehehe... NOW I find the I am wanting to add more value into the live of others that I could with just a "show" so I spend a grandest portion for my time “speaking, teaching and nagging” in the corporate (Business Success) and marriage and family life (Personal, & Re-Elationship) markets. Again LESS of a "business" choice but rather and personal growth and commitment literally “mandate” at this point in my life! It is my PASSION! What I am made for at this point in my life! It is what I MUST do now. – The fact that it is rewarding on ALL levels is a nice benefit, but it goes along with on of my life themes: “The More VALUE You Create, The Money You’ll Make!” Each advancement I was able to increase the way what I do brings that much ore VALUE to my re-elationships. Good question. I look forward to the responses. Thinking of YOU and Your Success! I am at your service and In HIS Service, Deano (loves doing his passion) in Reno <><

Yes, I changed my markets too.
Although I do not focus on birthday parties but the request still come in and sometimes if I have the time I will do a few but it is less than 10% of my total income.

Neale, like the beaver - is he new?
I started out strong into clowning; largely because of my family background. I reached a point where I realized that the clown just wasn't receiving the same respect and potential income as my magician and comedian persona. In fact, I found demand for the lower pay/more work clown competing with my higher pay magic and comedy acts. Markets change. You change. The mark of a professional is recognizing these changes and rolling with them. Best of luck! Skip

When you say "go after" do you mean that if something else came up you would turn it down? I have always worked for kid, school, family, adult, day care, community, church, corporate, and I'm willing to travel if the price is right. My feelings are that if I don't have a day job I can't be fussy about what kind of gigs I do.

Al, I think he means which market to go after. Other type of jobs will come about as he focuses on one area.

Part of this process is that I used to be a full time pro and am trying to make my way back there. I know some will disagree but I find I can't get there on birthday parties. I have also found I am really enjoying the new mixed audiences. Like others have said, we all change and evolve. Like Skip, I was a clown for a long time too. I just started foucsing on the vent (even though I had been doing it since I was 13) because the light finally came on that I like making people laugh and I am better at vent then magic, so that's part of the change too.

So Neale
It appears that we are in closer agreement than I thought. You don't want to move in one direction you want to move in lots of directions. I agree with you that when performing is what you do for a living you do what ever comes up mext. This week I'm doing a kids birthday party, opening day at the ball park, a fund raiser at a church, and a sweat 16 Bday party. GOOD LUCK Al

I have changed markets a couple of times.
I realized that for me keeping my options open for anything is better than nothing. Because of this I'm doing a lot of speaking presentations and concerts. Nothing is ever to small especially when opportunity knocks.

I did her 7th birthday party, and she asked her mom to hire me for her 16th. I had no wiggle room.

IN LA sweet 16 parties are a big bash.... They like to magically appear in cages of fire....
Neale to change your market you need to change your image... IF you like I will talk to you via phone to tell you how I changed from day one to more of a up-coming star image and still get bookings for shows.... PVT me...

Al,
I too have shifted markets several times. Also, I have different seasons for different markets. Now that we are getting into the warm months, I am preparing for my busy festival season, with a lot of traveling. In the cold months, the festivals don't run, and I focus on birthday parties, schools, etc. One of your comments intrigued me, however. You said "My feelings are that if I don't have a day job I can't be fussy about what kind of gigs I do." I found that interesting because MY opinion is that now that I do this full time, I CAN be fussy about what gigs I take. When I had a regular paycheck coming in, I could afford to take a little $100 birthday or whatever came my way. Now that I rely on my performing income, there are certain calls I get that I pass off to others simply because it is not worth my time.
