Hi Everyone,
I need your expertise in rope magic. I am looking for a rope trick that can be done with the assistance of a horse, yes, that is not a typo! It could be a rope through the neck or body of a horse or it could be where the horse holds one end of the rope in his mouth while I do the magic. The trick needs to be very visual and direct. Also, if it involves a gimmick I will need the gimmick to work with a 5/8 inch diameter rope. Any advice in pointing me to a magician, book, DVD or individual trick that can fulfill my needs is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance for your help. T. G. Murphy |

Bryan Dube sells a book called "Will Rogers Rope Tricks" by Frank Dean, which teaches 100 rope tricks. I don't know if the answer to your question is there but it only cost $7.95 at http://www.dube.com

In Daryl's videos, there are a couple of rope through bodypart tricks that would be no problem adapting to this.
Also, I recommend a simple cut/restored where a kid can hold one end, and the horse, the other. (Also adaptable from the Daryl videos.) |

Your request is pretty vague/open. Almost any rope through horse effect could work, or find some "escapes", where your horse keeps getting free after you tie him up (lots of fake knots, or the rope and pin (a variation of the grandmothers principle). Here the "pin" could be a post that you tie the horse to. Or you could play up that someone tries to steal your horse, but he keeps getting free.
Since "bridal rings" (oops, make that bridle) seem to be a common item in stables. You could add in some ring and rope tricks (and if you do, sell me one of those rings). Mark Wilson's book has a "cowboy" trick. It is very close to the Panama rope trick, which involves making a noose (think lasso) in the rope. As suggested above, you could get a book on rope tricks and see what fits. As implied by Al's recommendation, a folksy or cowboy theme from Will Rogers may fit. I've not seen that book, but some good books on rope include Fulves Self Working Rope Tricks, and if you get really excited, the Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks. John

I don't know why you would call your female assistants horses but it is whatever you want. And if you dress them up with a bridle you can do some ring and rope like John suggested, Flip has a video truly magical rope magic which has some ring and rope routines that could work where you attach the rope to the bridle then you can pull to show the rope does not come off then the horse can pull and free himself.
Maybe the traveling knot? you just have to make sure the horse isn't antsy and starts to move on you. but that could be done. Even a cut and restored rope. You could go really crazy and make it as though the horse is going to pull you in half tie your feet to a post and then to the horse and have him begin to pull then you magically free yourself, I am sure there are a lot of places you can go with a horse. How about lassoing a card. The horse just has to hold the rope in it's mouth and you lower it into a bag and it ties around the chosen card.
Very simple and could easily be promoted as "the Mind Reading Horse." It can be done with jumbo cards, and a simple force. I made mine from a set of linking ropes. Couldn't the horse push over large cards or pictures by having a treat stuck on the backside that you stuck on after it was chosen? There are two ideas that are outside the box!

Unless we're talking about a really docile horse, I think you ought to keep effects restricted to the neck area. Look into the grandmother's necklace principle.
