Some weeks ago I was in downtown (Orlando) and I stopped into a Subway sandwich place to have a bit of lunch, and sitting at one of the booths was a middle-aged, dark-haired scrawny fella with an improvised 'utility belt' made fron 2 fannypacks, and a top hat with a playing card tucked into the brim. I went over and asked if he was a busker and he said yes (I WAS tempted to start up the ol' busker-streetmage debate, but I didn't) and I asked what sort of tricks he did. He proceeded to do 4 tricks, every one of which I knew, and because I knew them I was able to 'play-off' on them perfectly. By play-off, I mean I said the exact perfect lines for his patter to bounce off of, and I 'challenged' his tricks in ways that he could not only disprove, but ended up improving the effect! By the end of the 4th trick I was 'amazed', and he was grinning ear-to-ear. I gave him a sawbuck & we parted ways.
That was SUCH an awesome experience!! Like popcorn for the soul. Have you ever encountered a fellow magi and participated in a trick? AS long as we stick to the cardinal rules, I'd say magicians make the best volunteers.

I've done something similar while a kid was doing magic at a farmer's market.
I told him I had a 6 of clubs in my wallet when nobody was around. the next time he had a small gathering, I walked up and he got to do a miracle.

Of course, you gotta stand up for fellow magicians! Even if they suck... Maybe even especially if they suck!

You know guys; that’s the type of talk I like to hear.
Yes I know the world is full of crappy magic and the instant magician now. Hey look I can do sponge balls how much should I charge for my show type of magician. I was recently at a convention and got into a heated debate with some people due to the fact that during the Close-Up competition a fellow magician was heckling the performers. I did a review of the convention, mentioned the issue I had and everyone kind of shrugged it off, and the individual in question PM'd me with his justification of why he does it. If the guy is good tell him so publicly, if the guy sucks, take him aside after and then give him constructive criticism, not just dude your act sucked. I hope that one day I am good enough & brave enough for you guys to see my street act. Keep it up

Great thread Mighty Fool!
I'm usually too impatient when someone wants to show me a trick. I'm ADHD on speed...only I'm not really ADD...but probably am HD... ...dang, see? There I go again! Yeah, so like I was saying; I need to learn to watch magic better. I LOVE good/great effects performed for me. I'm like a kid all over again. I need work on watching someone that's still working on things. Joshua Barrett is easy to watch. I could watch that guy all day long and never get tired of it. There's other guys that I've met though, even buskers, that I CAN'T STAND to watch. I need to grow up and learn to be a better person. Cuz in reality...I've got NO chops. I'm a manipulation minimalist. Gotta go meditate on this for a while. Good thread man. Yer makin' my head spin...in a good way. |
