I would assume that those 6 videos were released in Japan. Although, he is scheduled to have some DVD's released this year from Bob Kohler.

I think he has 4 or 5 japanese DVDs. They are called Digital Explorer. They have some of his rope stuff and other card things. If you want to get his videos i would contact him know because some times you have to wait for months because he isn't home.

Thanks a lot for all of your replies. I am assuming that some of you have seen the videos you mention. Would you recommend these videos and possibly provide a brief description of the material.
Thanks in advance

You can buy the Shoot Ogawa Lecture Video 2002 directly from Shoot. He has sold quite a lot of them in his lectures and travels. If I remember correctly it contains two matrix routines, two reset routines, a full deck routine and his rope routine. I actually shot and edited it for him, but it's been awhile since I've seen it. I believe he sells it for thirty dollars.

I think he is a good performer.
But, he explained some tricks in TV proglam before. On that TV proglam, The "Classic Force" and "thumb Tie" was revealed. So, many Japanese Magician made a protest against him. He have a bad reputation in Japan. I wish him the best of luck!

Speaking of the Classic Force, any word on when/if his DVD on this topic will be coming out?

Sorry to tell everyone, but the Force DVD project had to be canceled due to three technical problems with the master. It was not Shoot's fault as he did a brilliant job at the taping... just some gremlins in the works.
Hopefully, we can pick this project up again in the near future. Greg

Why does this exposure issue about Shoot consistently get swept under the carpet?
Greg - you know Shoot. What is the score here? I don't care how wonderful his teaching on the classic force is, IF he is an exposer I'm gonna get Kross on the case. This exposure issue gets brought up regularly. So did he or didn't he? We don't want to hear that you don't know. Greg - you know him well enough to film his video. Ask him the question. Don't bottle it by saying you hardly seem him anymore... If he has exposed, we CAN'T wish him the best of luck. We need to shun him. Scott |

How is the teaching on the dvds or videos

Well, Scott, this was an issue that was taken up by the Magic Castle a few years ago and I know something of it, but not all the specifics.
Here is what I know or have been told by others: A few years back Mister Yanagida, that's Shoot's teacher, was either approached or realized that there was going to be another type of Masked Magician thing done on Japanese TV. Shoot was used to do some of the demonstrations, but instead of doing the method that was used here he went another route. If you remember, when the Masked Magician exposed stuff here it was to show that magic was easy to do and it really took no skill. He showed how you can just buy props or have large mechnanical items that did the work for you. Basically, it was showing that as magicians we have no true skill and just buy items at the local magic shop... anyone can do it. Well, Shoot demonstrated things like the muscle pass and classic force. His demonstrations showed that it takes skill, practice and a lot of talent to be a well-trained magician. I saw those tapes and it even looked like magic when he did the classic force... the camera was from below and you saw this ace of Spades ride from one side to the other right until the moment that the interviewer's hand picked it out. At the time they did this I think his group was actually doing a positive thing, but since then they have seen it a bit differently and have stayed away from those confrontations. I would challenge most guys to try and duplicate what Shoot did on those shows because the skill level is so high that there a few that could do it. I was shocked at how they presented card at any number... you wouldn't be able to do it if you tried because it takes perfect estimation with a very short peek then a perfect classic force. I've seen him do it here to magicians and even when I explain it they don't believe. So, should he and his group not done what they did? Probably not and hits come back to bite the in the a** several times. They haven't done it since. Do I believe in exposurer? No. Do I coward and hide when it happens? No. I was in New York when the first Masked Magician thing happened and I knew the furor it was causing so I did my own study. I brought about ten friends, non-magicians, to my apartment and had them watch the show. I constantly told them to pay attention. They were almost uneasy around me as secret after secret was given away. Well, about a month or so later I brought most of them back and asked them to tell me what they saw. Most of the answers went like this, "Well, he did this thing that had some sort of secret thing that did the work." No real memory of the event. I also took a few to Tannens and had them watch some of the same effects done by the pros and the answer was usually, "That's not exactly what they showed on TV." I remember everyone around me saying that this was the death of magic. Hmm? And it seems like magic has become bigger and bigger. I did a show right after the big Psychic Exposure thing and still fooled people. Most thought that what they saw on TV couldn't possibly be what I was doing. I even made reference to checking under my table for someone hiding and that I should take off my shoes just in case I had a mirror in there. So, if you want to stop buying from Shoot, well, that's your choice. He is one of the most talented magicians I know and the most giving. I have two friends that have now competed in Japanese contests and they tell me that all the magic groups kind of dislike each other over there so I can see why every time someone mentions something positive about Shoot that someone chimes in... from Japan. I'll continue to be his friend and be amazed by the new effects he makes just about every day and I also know that he now wishes he had never been involved with that whole show. So that's the info from my side and as much as I know. I'm not hiding anything as you say... and, unlike many, I openly use my own name so when I confront someone they know it's me. Greg

Greg,
Thank you for your candid reply. It is good to hear from someone who knows the situation, rather than just listening to rumour and hearsay. I don't know you at all, but from your posts here on the Café you seem like a knowledgeable, ethical magician. So if Shoot is your friend that's good enough for me! Reagrds, Scott |

Greg -- Thanks for the thorough response. I've seen Shoot lecture, and while much of his material is advanced, he is also an exceptional teacher. Watching him live is truly like seeing real magic...
Don't think anyone will hold against him the expose in Japan -- I'm sure he thought through why he should/should not participate, and made a decision that seemed appropriate at the time. Would be interesting to hear it from his perspective however (similar to the interview this month in Magic with Jonathan Pendragon on Metamorphasis). Thanks again Scott |

Scott Leavitt, I think you'll find that it was not his particular decision to do what he did... in Japan, people work in groups and they have a leader or teacher, if the leader says you should do something, you do it... no questions asked.
Right or wrong, that's kind of their culture in many ways so questioning authority is frowned upon there. Since living in the U.S., Shoot has picked up more of the American customs and is becoming his own man in the magic community... that's not to say that he no longer has strong ties to his teacher, he does, but now he reflects more on what's good for his career when something is asked of him.
