Well, that's true enough, but the fact is that nearly any joke can be made to fit your line-up. On a side note: if a magician has some performing experience, he can figure out which jokes will and won't work for him. If he's decently intelligent, he can come up with details for the delivery.

Wsduncan: Every major TALK show - JACK PAAR, ED SULLIVAN, DAVID SUSSKIND, MIKE DOUGLAS, MERV GRIFFIN, DINAH SHORE, THAT'S INCREDIBLE, THE TODAY SHOW, GOOD MORNING AMERICA - many, many times on each. 23 times on THE TONIGHT SHOW with JOHNNY CARSON. Most news shows ALL OVER AMERICA, same in England, Australia, and on and on. Do you understand now? I know my post was difficult for you to grasp.
Oh, your "joke" re: "forgetting" one of my books has just made number 1,555,750 on the list of "heard before." You are SO original. HARRY LORAYNE.

Harry's system is tremendous. I bought his book years ago in paperback for a song. One of the best purchases I ever made. In my work, you have to be able to learn and remember a lot of people's names fast. It was my worst nightmare when I first started. It took me forever to learn even a few key names in a new congregation. But thanks to what I learned from Harry's book, I now learn them fast, easily, and even when a former member from a previous parish comes to me years later, I remember them and their family members' names.
In restaurant work, it is tremendous. People love it when you perform for them once, then they come in a few weeks later and you go and call them by name. I don't know what his book costs these days, but buy one and practice what is in it. You will be far better off for it.

Photius: Thanks for your post, but - I think most will still prefer the jokes. My latest is AGELESS MEMORY (Simple Secrets for Keeping Your Mind Young). I fought with the publisher to make it as inexpensive as possible, so that it would be available to all. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

Yes, even all the way over here in Australia Mr. Lorayne remains well known, and I can remember television appearances he has made stretching right back to when I was a kid. (Glorious Black and White)
I'm pretty sure he was on both of our most legendary shows - The Don Lane Show and The Mike Walsh Show. Before I took a keen interest in magic, I would have been able to name 3 magicians if asked - Houdini, Copperfield and Lorayne. Destiny |

When I was at the Bar, we used to have anywhere from 1200 - 2400 people come thru the door per night. And I've always been horrible with names, so I gave people nicknames based on their appearance. Not directly, but I had my own code, i.e. short with girl glasses and brown hair was gorgeous. Tall with girl glasses and brown hair was pretty lady. I had about 50. I got away with it for 10 years, and very rarely did I get caught on it.
For situations where I really needed a name, I would reverse a very old trick. I would go up to the person whose name I did not know and pull them aside to ask, "Listen, I really need a hand. There is a old friend over there whose name I can't remember. Can you come with me and introduce yourself?" The person would immediately feel as though I trusted them for my secret mission and would never dream that I am actually fishing for their name. And if I had no other option, I would call them by the name of some one of the opposite sex. Changing names constantly as if I was fishing for their name, i.e. walk up to a girl and say, "HELLO... BOB?, I haven't seen you in a long time... FRANK? So...TONY? What are you doing now?" They would generally get the joke quick, and I would follow up with, "Since I was a bit of an *** for not remembering your name, AND I don't like doing things half ***, I thought I'd just be a complete ***." Then after they had given me their name and I had had whatever conversation I was supposed to with them, I would leave by calling them a opposite sex name as close to their real name as possible. That was particularity funny with names like Pat - "Bye, Patrick." |

Hey, Simon: Just curious - please explain your "modest" post. If it means what I think it means, I'd like to discuss the "modesty" of those who think they have the knowledge, intelligence, experience, etc., to make definite statements about subjects/people they know ABSOLUTELY nothing about. Just curious. HL

From your post, I get that you find it frustrating that some magicians use jokes to remember names instead of YOUR memory systems. And I'm a bit tired of all the people here in the Café that are only recommending their own products (no matter how great they are, and I'm sure they're good products) on more that one occasion. That I don't find modest, as well. And I'm not claiming to have the experience, knowledge and intelligence to make statements about people I don't know. I form an opinion about people on this board from what they write in their posts. That is what my opinion is based on. And perhaps that doesn't reflect their true personalities, but it is the only thing I can go with on an Internet board. A flaw of modern communication, I guess. Best, Simon |

You're absolutely right, Simon. I'm sure everyone wants to know your opinions that you have only from posts and without knowing who or what you're talking about. You are, of course, entitled to your opinions. Whether you're entitled to state them publicly - even though they're so wrong "it ain't funny," I will leave to others. Of course, I am as entitled to my opinions as are you - but I don't think I can state that opinion here because it'd be deleted. You stay well, buddy, and keep quoting those idiotic opinions. You've given me a larger laugh than the oh-so-funny jokes in this thread. Keep up the great work. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

That's not a flaw in modern communication, it's a flaw in your evaluation process. Out of the 1187 posts made by Harry Lorayne, you're judging him by the 6 that appear in this thread - sound a bit off to you? There is plenty of information about Mr. Lorayne outside of the Café as well, plenty to use to form an accurate opinion. I find it interesting that you both know and acknowledge that your evaluation system doesn't work, yet you still use it and claim that the evaluations are valid. Sounds like a prime example of arrogance to me.

Dbaker_creator: "Hypocrite" fits perfectly - it's the word I was searching for; thanks. You know, it's a perfect example of the rusty platitude - "No good deed goes unpunished." Here I read about people having problems remembering names, and making silly jokes about it (jokes, incidentally, that I've written about, known about, for about 60 years), and I figure, what the heck, I'll try to help - maybe these people don't know that THEY CAN REMEMBER NAMES. That's what I teach, that's what people like Doc Eason and so many others use, and etc. But, forget it. You get somebody who is perfect for the "WHO ASKED YOU" page come in with that arrogant, immodest, egotistical, know-it-all, insulting, st***d, HYPOCRITICAL, ********. And, he THINKS HE'S RIGHT. God save us! HL
