Hello,
I once saw a magician doing a jumbo card trick as a MC, between two other performances. He had a jumbo deck which has been cut diagonally. So he handled two piles of half cards. I don't remember exactly the different stages of the performance, but two selections were made (on in each pile) and the two spectators, of course, selected the two halves of the same card. I guess this was using a kind of rough/smooth method. Anyway do you guys know if this is a marketed item I could find anywhere? Thanks, Jonathan. |

Jonathan,
I can think of two ways to do this--and neither involve rough and smooth. One is Aldo Colombini's "Jumbo Coincidence" (although he doesn't use diagonally cut cards. He uses cards cut straight across the middle of the cards). There is another effect callec "Lickity-Split" although I'm not certain if this is a variant of another effect. I seem to recall that this effect did use cards cut on the diagonal AND each half of the deck had a different colored back Both use a different methodology but the effect is essentially the same--except that "Jumbo Coincidence" has a kicker ending more surprising and stronger than the 1st ending. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks.
It's definitely not Jumbo coincidence. Seems rather to be this one: "Split deck" in Jumbo format. It's marketed and I think it's rough and smooth. Many thanks in any case! Jonathan. |

It definitely sounds like a jumbo Split Deck. It's a great effect. There's also a jumbo Comedy Split Deck ... similar story line, but you add that you've made a prediction (in an envelope) on what card the two spectators will select. When they reveal their selections one shows the 7 of clubs and the other the jack of Diamonds ... looks like you goofed. Until you reach into the envelope and pull out a card that's half 7 of clubs and half Jack of Diamonds. Not sure if it plays stronger, but it's a bit different ... maybe more tongue-in-cheek. We used to perform a "regular" jumbo split deck routine and then offer to try it again and really have a strong finish with the Comedy Split Deck...

Hi Larry
In the "normal" action of putting the cards away(boxed)the switch was accomplished when we pretended to hear someone say, "do it again". The easel that is used to display the card is still on the(nite club)table waiting to be put away in preparation for the next trick. You look up and smile just as your hands have dropped below the horizon of the table with the first set of cards. Immediately you bring the Comedy Split Deck set into view while joking about "doing it again" and LOOKING AT THE AUDIENCE. It's all about timing. The switch is NEVER noticed. The anchor of having the display easel still on the table seems to reinforce the fact that nothing has changed. Try it, you'll like it! This makes a powerful ROUTINE out of what otherwise is just a cute "trick". Have fun and let me know the reactions you get. Julie |

Julie,
Nicely routined! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'll have to add that kicker ... and you're right, it sounds like it elevates the effect several notches. I had a great reaction from the Split Deck a few weeks ago at a meeting in the office (I work at a major engineering firm and I've been opening my meetings with a magic trick for some time now). I started pretty much like the basic Split Deck routine including the gag about how that backs match just prior to flipping the card-halves over. As I'm putting the cards away I mention that in reality I had a 1 in 51 shot of getting it right once the first card was selected. "That's hardly a miracle ... just a strange coincidence. Now if I could have predicted in advance that both of you were going to select the six-of-diamonds ... now THAT would have been in the miracle category." The trick is over … or so they think. I put the cards away and turn on the video projector as I get ready to start the meeting. Slowly, the image on the screen becomes more defined as the projector warms up. It's an image of a card ... the six-of-diamonds. [Of course I set this all up prior to the meeting.] It took a few seconds to sink in, but when it did there was a second round of laughter and applause. I've never got that reaction from the lowly Split Deck before. I guess it's true ... it's all in the presentation. Regards, Larry
