I am just starting to send out my first mailing to for camp shows. My question is how much of a deposit should I require when the show is booked? What percentage of the fee?

Ultimately it depends on what you feel comfortable with...
I collect 50% up front, and this is non refundable if there is a cancelation... sometimes deposits pay the bills... J

Well, for private parties I get a $100 retainer, for corporate events it is 50% of the fee. I use the word retainer on the contract and explain that it is non-refundable. But they can change the date if I am available.
Some fellow magi I know ask for $50. This is up to you. I treat camps as a corporate client. I would get 50%. I find contracts and deposits are very useful. It gets the client to commit. I also put a deadline in the cover letter to set a time frame. If I don't get the retainer by a certain date they could loose the booking. I will call the day of the deadline to see if they just forgot to send it or if they changed their mind. If they missed the deadline, 99.99% of the time they sent it late or just have too much going on and they forgot.

When I do weddings I take a 25% deposit and the balance 30 days before the event. Saves me chasing after the bride or groom on their big day.

When I do the private functions I ALWAYS get payment prior to the show.
I phrase it as "I know you will be busy later, so lets just get the paperwork out of the way right now so you can spend time with your guests". The line works wonders.

Deposits: No
Retainer: Yes (at least $100.00) Get balance paid in full 7 business days before the event (cheque clears). I also use the line that Danny uses when talking to clients. |
