Ok, maybe Kirby came up with it first, and DC ripped it from him. But it certainly is not "Metamorphoses" in the traditional sense. We all know Metamorphoses is usually seen with a curtained cabinet or a curtain you raise by hand, box is on the stage. This version is very distinct, and it appears that the idea has been borrowed (lifted or stolen, which ever you prefer) from either DC or Kirby then. So, here is a clear case of idea theft, on a tv show with celebrity magicians (Rocco, McBride, Maven, etc.) and the Magic Castle name attached. As for the Asrah sequence, this has nothing at all to do with the "Artist's Dream" illusion. The Asrah sequence is a carbon copy of DC's DeKolta Chair vignette, you will have to review old Copperfield TV specials to see what I mean. The two are so similar, even down to the stage setting with the photograph and everything. Again, not pointed out by magician "celebrity" judges or coaches on the show. Funny how I noticed it but these guys who are "icons" in magic missed it. Same people who preach creativity and originality to everyone. Talk about hypocrisy! I think I will start doing both tricks in my show. When someone questions me, I can say, "well it's ok, the magicians on Celebracadra stole it from Copperfield anyway"

Here's a link to an old Copperfield levitation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vRuBNgga0s And here is the DeKolta Chair vanish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gu2PZMgEjg And here is David's version of Metamorphosis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOdr2-tUlxw I'm not seeing a lot of similarity here between these and Thomas's performance in Celebrecadabra. "The Artist's Dream" motif, I believe, was first created by David Devant in London. "Metamorphosis" is credited to Harry Houdini.

In the finale, C. Thomas Howell performed a dollar bill manipulation, which Rocco credited as a Jeff McBride effect. Does anyone know the name of the effect, and where it's in print or on DVD?

Rocco told me yesterday that he was WRONG...it's NOT McMugs trick.

I received my July issue of Genii Friday and C. Thomas Howell is on the cover and there is a great article by David Regal finishing his 3 part column on Celebracadabra. It was a wonderful read.
David Regal also writes that Tommy Howell's Dollar Bill effect was the Osaka Bill Production. |

The You Tube of Dekolta Chair is a poor example; it does not show the entire routine, only the vanish. The routine is what was stolen.
The You Tube of DC'S Metamorphoses clearly shows: A. Magician is secured in a unit which is raised overhead, just like Celebracadabra B. Girl assistant down below holding a large cloth, just like Celebracadbra C. Switch takes place between Magician (overhead) and Girl (down below), just like Celebracadbra. I don't know how to make it any more clear than that. Thank you for posting that You Tube video; it even has Copperfield on it saying how that is his trick and it took him 16 years to come up with it. No mention of Kirby Van Burch. Pretty much proves my point. Surprised the "Magic Police" judges did not realize that is DC's routine. I will send my concerns to David Copperfield, perhaps he or his lawyer can decide if they are simmilar or not. |

Tommy Howell/David Regal's Safe change was a 3-way change
Tommy from safe to cloth (wanted poster) Assistant from Cloth to House. Female Cop from off stage to Safe... It was entertaining and I certainly enjoyed the routine. |

Oh, because it was a THREE WAY CHANGE that is so dramatically different, and now Regal's a genius. Give me a break! IT'S THE SAME TRICK !!!!!

Actually, I AGREE WITH YOU, what I am addressing is the self appointed magic gurus who go to conventions and post on sites like this and are always screaming "BE ORIGINAL! ORIGINALITY! QUIT STEALING MY TRICKS/ROUTINES/JOKES, ETC." Some of these ones who are always doing the complaining were on that show. If they are such geniuses of originality, and don't want people copying THIER STUFF, then why is it ok for them to copy others? The ones who always point the finger are the biggest offenders. We have just proved in the previous paragraphs that the material on that show has been done before, so where do people like McBride and Max Maven get off at preaching originality? My point is that there is way too much HYPOCRISY in magic. If you or I did that same routine, some smart mouth in a magic magazine would call us a HACK. But's it sure seems ok when the Magic "Good ole Boys Club" steals routines, tricks and jokes. As long as your face is in a magic rag, on a tv show, or at the Magic Castle, you can steal and hack all you want.

Ok, I am going to do the same trick in a magic contest at a big magic convention. I will have some kind of box or unit built, and will be secured in it. It will say "banana crate" or something like that. Then it will be raised off the ground, like DC's Metamorphoses. I will have a girl under it hold a cloth, and do a super fast exchange, ala Pendragons cloth handling. The cloth will say "ZOO" or something like that. Then I will appear down below, and the box will come down, and inside is a gorilla. The girl appears in the audience. When the judges say, "hey we saw something just like that on Celebracadbra" I will argue that NO, it was Maskelynes Trunk Escape, stolen by Houdini, and then was stolen by Kirby, then stolen by DC, cloth handling stolen from Pendragons, and then was stolen by Celebracadbra. There are too many thieves, so in a way they all cancel each other out. Anyway, I was so original, instead of using a safe or a box, I used a banana crate, and a gorilla. Brilliant, huh? I think I will also build and sell a Blaney Suspension using table lamps rather than step ladders, and then claim it is mine too.
