I am intrigued by the use of magnets in magic. There is no denying that they can be used in lots of different contexts. The problem is that if they are used to create a visible effect such as movement, levitation etc (as opposed to a covert utility type use such as locking the flap in a card box) then the method is often obvious. Any suggestions for strong magic brought about by magnets???

Alan Warner makes the most beautiful magic apparatus that cleverly incorporate magnets into the method. A partial list include:
The Talisman The Mummy Scarab-A-Scarab Captive Card The Gillyman Eye of Isis Li Chang's Boxes The Wonderland Door |

I would have to disagree with you, Aktino. I use the r***n in some routines, and magnets are never really even thought of to explain what has happened. It is all in how you present the effect. Lets not forget that there are other methods than magnets to achieve movements. IT comes to mind... As for applications of magnets, there are so many. George has put up a good list. I would add the following:
Bat Deadlock ... other effects are very self explanatory if you name them and add "magnet" in the sentense... Have a nice day! Louis Jutras |

Hi Simon,
Went back and counted...yep, you are about right. Alan has always expressed an interest in using magnets in his apparatus, along with the clever wood working, much not appreciated as it is hidden within the apparatus. George |

Bob McAllister wrote a booklet years ago called "Dot's Magic" which included effects using small Neodymium magnets.
Almost impossible to find nowadays. |

Take a look at this Magnet kit on Aldo Colombini's web site.

I think the "obviousness" of some magnet use is more a question of handling. Most of the PK effects that use such apparatus can be devestatingly visual and look pretty close to "real" magic. However, the difference between a gimicky looking trick and an amazing PK effect is, more often than not, a question of subtlety.
BTW, this link has been passed around quite a bit, but if you want to start playing: http://www.supermagnetman.net/index.php?cPath=48

Thanks a lot for your ideas and suggestions. There are several leads that I will follow up on.
As an aside, Ben Harris' Enlightenment opens up new avenues for using magnets in magic - as discussed in other threads. |

David Regal did a lecture recently. Lordy, I'll bet he has trouble getting through a metal dectector!. Talk about magnets! I believe there are quite a few tricks in his book. With magnets and double stick tape, I think Regal could rule the world.
