Also remember, that if an idea doesn't work for you, don't just count it out as ineffective.
Talk with some other pros you can brainstorm with (a mastermind group), and find some nuances you might have missed. Maybe you did it wrong, but they found a way of doing it right. Some people may bomb with their ad in a parents magazine, and some might be successful. It might have nothing to do with the region, and everything to do with the ad content and style of selling. Update: They last couple of weeks my email bookings are approaching 75% vrs. 25% phone. I'm just saying....

Mine are about 50/50 right now. And usually then end up on the phone with me because I encourage them to use my toll free number as it's quicker and easier..B.T.W. I find business to be "up" this year. I"ll bet the Dean can answer this one, I read this book about 4 or 5 years ago that is a great "sales" read. It's about mice and cheese..and changing times. I highly recommend this book, if I could just think of the title... |

Ken. I have seen that trend as well this year and that is why I switched gears a bit. I am getting a lot of folks contacting me through our website and via email as well. I always feel marketing can never bea stangnant thing. You have to be willing to change as the economy and the times change. You must always track your results and be willing to change things as needed.

Oh so you are not the only one Al? hehehe I thought it was me that always got behind them. true story. the other day I was driving to work and a lady is talking on cell phone with the right hand and applying makeup with the left. driving the car with her knees. Crazy people.

Everyone here knows the business quite well. I can tell from your postings.
You are all probably great children entertainers, or you wouldn't be in the business so long. You can do all the advertisement you want, but don't forget that the children are your direct customers. The parents just supply the money. Your show is the most important selling point to the children. They make the decision if they want you at their party. They just pass it on to the parents. As you all know, it's not the first booking that makes you a success, but it is the repeat shows makes that makes you. It's my utmost job to make sure that every child at the party leaves with only one thought in mind "I want Tricky Ricky at my party" Go over your last year list and take note of how many repeat bookings you had. If they are few , then you know that you are doing something wrong. All businesses are built on referrals bar none. That is where the parents come in. If the children are happy, so are the parents. Your phone isn't ringing because mom, and dad are broke, but corporate, and community groups still have an entertainment budget. That is why your business has shifted. Of course the spin doctors will disagree with me as usual, but that is the way I see it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm alive" "Got my hand on a jug got the girl that I love and it's driving me out of my mind" The Hooters If the moms and dads aren't shelling out for entertainment (otherwise broke) then that would mean that they are also cutting back spending at these companies whom hire us to entertain at their events! I have found that companies that specialize in "debt consulting" etc have been calling me for picnics etc. They are making loads from struggling companies that are afraid of "going out of business" In my opinion these companies aren't worth hiring to keep your business going. They suck a lot of cash out of your business expenses to keep you going for a few more months. Any Thought/Opinions? Chaz |

I have discovered there has been less phone calls but same amount of bookings.
Meaning less shoppers and more buyers!

I have seen the same thing happen. I am getting less phone cals but a LOT more website and email inquireries. people are just finding it much easier and faster for them to do online searches as opposed to YellowPages and can send emails out a lot quicker. It is also more a comfort thing to send an email then to talk to someone on the phone so this factors into it as well.
In regards to "parents not shelling out the money", I find that opposite to be true. The parents I am dealing with are not only shelling out the money, but they are shelling out a lot more then they did last year for what I am giving to them. I have not seen a downside on b-day shows but an upswing. now a lot of this stems from a new way I am marketing and targeting and working with the econmic side of things. as the economy changes, so must your marketing tactics and strategies. kyle

I got 3 email's today about gig's..
People are becoming more and more web savy and in turn the yellow pages and phones are going the way of the "Fax Flyer" or "Door Hanger" people still make money door knocking but its not as effective as the web any longer.. Seth Godin talks about all this in his book "Meatball Sundae" (I spend a ton of time reading about business and marketing, because well that's how I support my bad habits.. eating and sleeping indoors)

I had an email inquiry (back and forth) on Monday of this week. Inquiry only.
However, yesterday (Tuesday), I had 3 incoming phone calls. These were inquiries that all turned into bookings. I'm not saying that every call becomes a booking, or that that every email inquiry doesn't book. And some that called had seen my website before calling. I'm sure that we all see a variety of trends, mostly akin to our preferences. - Donald

I think that is very true Donald. I think it is also in how you have your marketing set up. Most of my stuff is aimed and geared at sending people to my website. My call to actions encourage this direction and push. Of course I also have my phone number on the pieces and marketing, but the main push has been in the direction of my online presence.
I also have been doing a lot of SEO as well as internet website link placement at sites on the web that link back to my site. This generates more traffic also. Kyle

My website is a part of the mix (I also said this way back near the start of this thread), however I try to emphasise that they should call me as opposed to emailing me. And that emphasis seems to work.

Right Donald and not a problem with that at all. It is really how you personally want to direct most of your marketing and which you want to place that emphasis on.
