Has anyone here taped their live shows and sold and/or pre-sold videos to the audience afterwards? I'm considering ways of doing this and any thoughts would be appreciated. I know several non-magic acts that do it and are very successful at it.

That has been going on in the HYPNOSIS biz for all time and eternity... I remember doing that waaaaaaaay back in the day and hypnotists are all still doing it today. (Mostly on DVD now, of course... Hehehehe!)
I agree, and have thought about why other markets (Magic, Music... etc Though KARAOKE folks HAVE also done this.) don’t do much the same thing. Of course the main REASON that buyers are even interested is that THEY are “IN” the show, so as long as your show is super-high in audience participation (Like Hyp & Karaoke) then you have a potential winner and I say GO FOR IT! I don’t know how interested they would be is JUST a live video of YOU, ME, any one of us, when they just saw the show and they aren’t in it… who knows. Sure. We sell full-length compilation show Tapes/DVD’s after shows and they sell just fine, but we offer them on the basis of the fact that the video is of stuff THEY DID NOT already see… etc. Again, who knows. Give it a try and see for yourself. YES, we have recorded and sold both our other “Highly Interactive” type shows (Game Shows, Karaoke, Hyp… etc) as well as the shows and events that are “super highly customized” just for them, (Magic of the CEO… etc) but all for the same reason… THEY want them if THEY are in them. GREAT Question! I hope that adds to the discussion... I am at your service and In HIS Service, Deano <>< PS I WILL say that our formal "Close Up Magic Show" sells pretty well event though there are only a FEW guest up in the chairs... but then again, I use LIVE Video Support on big screens so since I am set-up, I might as well “offer” copies for sale and they do “ok”. NOT nearly as big as the old Hyp shows or Game Shows, but since it all set up anyway…

Dean,
Hyp acts are certainly an easy act to sell videos after the show. I used to do a hyp show. I'm in a specialized tourist market in my dinner show. I use nine people + per show on stage and for years guests have been coming to me asking if I sell tapes of each show. For various reasons it wasn't feasible in the past but I'm rethinking it now. I also know several acts in Branson and Pigeon Forge that sell tapes of each show and they are musical acts with limited audience participation yet they sell a tons of tapes. I think it's a great idea and one I would like to do if I ever get a show together. I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and ended up catching quite a few magic shows. Most of them I would have loved to have purchased a dvd afterwards. I don't think I would have needed the live performance though.

They have the whole place (OK, maybe not the bathrooms) but most of the whole place rigged with cameras! They even have them that scan the audience. Then someone edits each nights show together so "everyone" at the show will be on the video - giving more people incentive to buy one. I would think that taking the orders and keeping track of who gets which show would be a bit of a challenge though. Hey, here's an idea! What if you were able to accept e-mail orders immediately after the show. They pay you the money then and you give them a receipt with a web address and password (so they are assured of getting the correct video) and then they just download the video when they get back home? It would be easier to upload each show video one time to a web site than to produce 50-100 tangible copies per night, package them, mail them, etc... This seems like the way to go to me! Technology baby! Gotta love it! Lyndel |

Fantastic idea!!! I love it! Yes, the Comedy Barn was one of the shows I was thinking of. Also Louise Mandrell's manager is a friend of mine and told me that they taped every show and she sold a ton of videos after Louise' show every night. I was surprised because she didn't have a lot of audience members onstage.

A different question:
Does anyone allow the audience to film them at private events? I have always allowed it but with Youtube being what it is I may stop the practice.

I don’t encourage or allow filming of my live shows, as I have no control over quality or distribution, but I’m not a nazi about the whole thing either, nice entertainers get re-booked <grin>.
I would never consider selling a full-show DVD at the back of the room, as I know of abuses where they “run the tape” rather than hiring live entertainment in some cases, and I also want to keep the details of my original work as far away from the prying eyes of magicians who love to copy-cat as possible. Most importantly, I believe that Magic works best as a live-and-personal interaction with an audience, and once on video there are diminishing returns, some of the most entertaining magicians I know look rather lack-luster on their YouTube clips, so I’ve learned live is the best way to go. My thoughts, Walt |

Once I had a company insist that I send them a tape of the entire show because they hired a bad act in the past..... and you guessed it..when I called back they told me I was great but now that everyone has seen the show there was no reason to hire me.
That was 20 years ago, now all I send 7 minutes.

You have to know your audience and know what it is that is selling the DVD. The DVD's in Branson are sold to a much older/ WWII generation crowd. Also they "personalise" them by putting up different graphics and such for intermission around people, and do things like that to make people buy them. So instead of all that investment, it is easier to just sell a great well produced copy of your show. One thing though, make it a CURRENT show! Nothing drives people more nuts than to be waiting for a spacific trick and NOT SEEING it. Selling them after the hypnosis show is falling off a log. We sell lots of them simply because people are in them. That is why it makes sense.

TONY: - "...for years guests have been coming to me asking if I sell tapes of each show." Hey brother, looks like you got your answer... and for years now! I would RUN, not walk, to get your video and duplication equipment all fired-up and recording… "YESTERDAY"! (…for years now!) DIG? There ain't much more of a clue than "real BUYERS asking to cram cash into your pockets"! In my world, all it would take is 1.3 seconds after the first buyer asks for a chance to give me more money I would have been "all over it" like white on rice buddy my friend! As I said in the first post "Give it a try and see for yourself!" Party on! Deano <>< PS I DO like the idea of having camera around… the more you get your audience in the video, the more they are likely to want to buy a copy! Ever been to “Amazing Jonathan’s” show where the ENTIRE Preshow is videoing the audience with captions and comments? It get’s a killer reaction! Now it’s not the “way” I would do it, but the idea is worth checking into throughout your show. Heck a great routine in the middle of your show using that premise would be a potential knock-out! Like I siad... GO FO IT! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Oops... Danny and I were posting at the same time. Some good stuff there too!

I see Tony's show every time I'm in Orlando. (Be there next month!)
I can see where getting a tape of "tonight's" show would be great. I've been on stage with Tony, along with a friend of mine, and my wife, and my friend's daughter....all in different shows. I would have bought a lot of tapes by now! I also own a Comedy Barn tape I bought from years ago, and a live "Haygoods" tape from Branson. When you are there with friends and family, you are buying a memory of that evening. Of course, I've also seen some shows where I wouldn't want the tape. But that's not you, Tony!

Saw The Haygoods again last night, and they are still making a killing selling their live show DVDs... available just minutes after the show is over.
Chris Jones, chief theatre critic from the Chicago Tribune wrote about this practice after his trip to Branson last year... http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-......n-show/2

Haygoods are not a good example of "making a killing". Along with many shows here in town they have been losing money at an unbelievable rate. Along with SIX oddly enough who was mentioned in your article.
Let me show what I mean. In Branson it has gotten ugly with ticket sellers. They take up to and even above at times 80% of a ticket face value from the show. Yes if you have a $40 ticket often the big shows like those mentioned might see $15 of it. Then you have to pay for the theater, which usually takes at least 1/2 of the remainder of the ticket cost and bamo you have what is left. Billboards in town are over a grand a month, ads in Travelhost and other such publications, and on and on and on and the fact you are on an 8 month spread sheet nobody is "making a killing". OH BUT IT GETS WORSE! How? Well let me explain. If you want to be the #1 show that is recommended by any given ticket seller you have to give them a HUGE block of free tickets. Upwards of $20,000 in free (DISCOUNTED) tickets. (There are 10 ticket sellers in town associated with time share companies.) Money you NEVER get back. Now the video crept into creation in Branson WELL BEFORE being the way I described it. It was a way to really make "extra money" and the shows did ok with this formula. Now the problem is that it is no longer that way and too often shows DEPEND on the idea of selling merchandise. Often it is so bad that the band sells popcorn at intermission! Now the Haygoods and SIX are interesting because after you have done ALL that I describe above, PLUS a whole lot more, you then divide by 6 or 7. Ouch. I am not bashing Haygoods or SIX, but sadly this is the situation they and EVERY show in the town are caught up in. They are amazing entertainers, and so are 90% of the shows in this town. It is sad they are caught up as they are and can't get out! Many of the shows have come to depend upon BOR and it is absolutely killing each and every one of them. They do not deserve to be treated like that. Tony here is an idea that may help you. I noticed a couple of years ago an interesting trend. More and more the DVD is becoming obsolete especially among the younger crowd. What I started doing with the hypnosis show was giving them a link of it in the email. It saves you 100% of costs of packaging and believe it or not I did not notice anyone who said "well if I don't get one I won't buy". What we do is take the money, take an email address and send the link to them. People download music like this all the time. PM me if you want more of a description of the process.

Smart idea on the email and link, Danny.
A question for you, because I've heard the same thing about the ticket sellers from a magician that had a show there. Is there any way to bypass them? Are they the only ones, generally, that can get tickets into the hands of the public? I've never been to Branson, but I'm assuming each theater has a box office. Do people just not use them anymore? |
