I must add my vote for 2 of the most prolific thinkers and creators in mentalism, Lee Earle and Larry Becker. Their creativity continues to this day. Long may it continue.
Quite a remarkable career for both these gentlemen. Hennessey

If you believe Mel Gordon, Erik Jan Hanussen may have been the single most influential mentalist in history.
He affected almost everyone on this forum in some way, if Gordon's conclusions are correct. By supporting Hitler and correctly predicting (and possibly starting!!!!) the Reichstag fire, Hanussen may have been the cause of the Holocaust. Ironically, Hanussen was Jewish. Rasputin would be a close second.

Bill,
Hanussen was not the cause of the holocaust. Please show some respect. Thanks, P. |

Eugene Burger, though technically not a mentalist, but for the way he inspires a sense of real mystery in his magic.
Theo Annemann ... I read everything of his I can get my hands on ... T.A. Waters ... Brilliant thinker. Docc Hilford ... Again, not strictly a mentalist, but another intelligent thinker and somebody capable of elevating simple effects into the class of mystery. Larry Becker ... For Stunners. ... and honorable mentions to, Lee Earle, Kenton Knepper, Corinda, Anruzzi and Shiels ... Oscar |

Please show some reading comprehension. BTW, precisely how familiar are you with Hanussen's writings? As far as that is concerned, how much do you know about Hanussen? Have you read Wilifried Kugel's book? Have you read Mel Gordon's book? While Hanussen may not have been the proximate cause of the holocaust, if he was responsible for Hitler's acceptance by the German people, and/or if he was the person who convinced Van Lubbe to set fire to the Reichstag, for which there is some evidence, then would it not be logical to at least place part of the blame on Hanussen? Are you familiar with the letter to Juhn, in which Hanussen said that he did not believe all of the nonsense that Hitler had been spouting until he was thrown in prison, begging Juhn to take the hint and get out of Germany before Hitler's thugs came after him, too? It's not a simple case. To deny that Hanussen had any part in getting Hitler to power would be as shortsighted as to not render all of those who contributed various and sundry parts of the puzzle that led to the Holocaust. Even the Grimm brothers played a part in the mindset that led to the whole thing. This is not intended to remove any guilt from Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, Ohst, Speer or any of the other people who were directly involved in it. It's a matter of pointing out who some of the unwitting participants of this whole thing could have been. Hanussen was a power-hungry, manipulative weasel. He played with fire and got burned.

It's been a while since I read it, but I remember Toland's comprehensive Hitler biogaphy mentioning how Hitler, already a charismatic speaker, learned certain gestures and techniques from Hanussen that made him even more effective in front of a crowd.

You are right. I misquoted myself. That's what I get for writing so late. I apologize for my comment about the reading comprehension. My bad.
I don't believe Hanussen was the cause of the Holocaust. I DO believe that he was a contributing factor. Some believe that he gave Hitler personal instruction in how to harangue a crowd. There is no evidence that the two ever actually met, that is, there are no verifiable photographs of the two of them together; however, Hanussen was a huge success in Vienna and in Berlin. He was a member of the Nazi party, and he promoted them actively in his newspaper. Not only that, he loaned several of the upper level members of the Nazi party rather substantial sums of money. Some of the signed IOU's are easily found. I have heard recordings of Hitler speaking, and I have heard recordings of Hanussen speaking. Their speech patterns at the same volume levels are very, very similar. My major when I was in college was Germanics. This is a comprehensive study of the language, literature, philosophies and history of the German people. It's basically a cultural study. One of the courses I took traced the development of the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler from its roots in German literature and a movement that was sweeping almost all of Europe and America at the time. During the late 1800's and early 1900's, almost all of the major countries were trying to apply scientific principles of one sort or another to prove that there was some reason that they could claim for themselves the dubious honor of being the place where humanity originated. Many scientists who were not as disciplined as modern scientists would like to consider themselves fell prey to the nationalistic fervor that was sweeping the various cultures involved. The UK, for example, fell prey to the Piltdown hoax. The Grimm brothers were part of the chain in Germany. They were not simple story-tellers. In point of fact, they were philolgists who were trying to trace the origins and development of the German language(s). Their collection of fairy tales or Hausmärchen was intended as a way of tracing linguistic developments. However, instead of collecting from primary sources, they tended to collect their stories at diplomatic parties, etc., where the attendees would tell them the stories their nannies told them when they were children. Many of the linguistic principles the Grimms discovered are still used by philologists and linguists. But some of the conclusions they drew regarding the origins and development of the German language and its peoples involved leaps of faith that were later to prove fatal to many.
