I became interested in magic as a child.
Read the books, studied hard, (practiced for days and days), worked in the local Magic Store as my first job out of High School (demonstrated and practiced non-stop), did a small club act in a local night club (lied about my age). When I was in High School in the late sixties and very early seventies, I played what I called the at the time the 'Chain Game'. Kids knew I did this gambling thing and we'd play and I'd win. Figured out I only had to win more than I lost to keep them coming back (you HAVE to lose to make it look good). Now it's marketed as 'Fast and Loose'. I learned it out of some book. Later adapted Nick Trost's moves (On the Barrelhead). Okay – so I cheated in my ethics class. So tell it to Scalia and get over it. I used my winnings to go to the magic store that would later hire me to buy - you know - stuff. Boxes, tubes, and books - OMG I discovered Magic books! Sure there was Tarbell's (later gave the whole set away) and Bobos (you can have it when you take it from my cold dead fingers). But I was always interested in the dark stuff. Not mind reading, which I thought was kind of wonky, but the real dark side. But we all know how life turns. One thing lead to another. One job followed another, and I strayed far from the performance magic. Put up the linking rings (oh I still have them, trust me), the wands collected dust, but I moved deeper and further into the darkside. Nowadays I live in what I call the darkside of magic. Many of you would call me bad names. However I only use my powers for good - RFLMAO. Let me explain it differently. Imagine you work for General Motors. They pay you, they treat you well. But in your spare time, off the clock – you love to hang out and drive a Toyota. Really fast. I know that some members will detest what they believe I represent. Others will learn. We're all judgmental to a degree. I love Sardine and Onion sandwiches. My friends, it's all good. I remember how I learned to escape from a straightjacket (must have been about 69 or 70), this guy took me into his basement, strapped me in. Picked me up and tossed me onto the floor and said, "I'm going upstairs to make a pot of coffee. Back in a bit." and climbed up the stairs in his slow arthritic gait. Later he taught me his ring routine. Classic stuff that - Well I've certainly rambled, and look at the time. If you need me, I'm over in the corner. ETA: but I never stopped. I stopped reading Genii, and hanging out in Magic Stores, but never stopped loving pure magic. Think Johnson Cups rock - and love both Garcias now past (Jerry and Frank - the latter who took one look at my sponge ball move and said, "You can't do that! That's stupid! Do it again...") Gawd - is there anybody here who remembers Ernie Bryant? The big guy? I still worship in his general direction |
