I would like to build my own table. Where can I get some good basic plans for a table. I have one from Mark Wilson's "Cyclopedia to magic" small paperback book. Table packs flat, but only has room for props after set up, would like something I can carry props in and convert to table if possible. Thanks for all replies ahead of time.
Hey wanna see me pull a rabbit from my hat, (lion appears). I gotta get a new Hat.

There are two books on tables. The Table Book I & II by Gene Glove. The 1st book is on earlier tables (the 1920s) and the second is on modern tables (1950s). For the price of the book $7.50 you can get some really good ideas.
Micky Hades book, The Make-up of Magic, has a suitcase table with folding wings. These are just a couple of books I know of off the top of my head. If I had to pick one it would be the Table Book II. I bought a suitcase table like the pros have and I have my own wood shop. I am thinking of making a couple more, without the cloth.

I'm looking to build my own table(s) as well, together with a few boxes to carry props in. I've looked at the photographic type metal cases for carrying close-up in.
I believe that this approach will also work for any stand-up props I wish to carry. Probably looking to attach the tables to the bags just like I carry my tripods strapped to my camera case (this is a special purpose rucksac). Thinks - Maybe I can carry props this way. Cheers Mike

A good idea is to use a flat topped sprinkler head, screwed to the middle or the back side of your case. The sprinkler heads have a threaded bottom to them. You then need to attach a threaded reticulation pipe (water pipe, don't remember what they are called in American English, sorry to the Yanks in advance) to whatever you use for your stand, be it music stand, base or photo tripod, etc.
Hope this is useful Maynooth
The race is long and in the end it is only with one's self.

An old idea for a table that clowns use alot is , getting a metal trunk,(Wal-Mart $19.95-29.95) take the hinges off and replace them with "Door" hinges.(the type hinge with a small rod that goes down thru the center that keeps the two halves together.)
Knock the hinge rods out and take the top off. Set the large part of the trunk on its end open side facing you. Then you can secure the door to the (now)top of the trunk (You have to figure the best way to do this.) and it can be used as a tabletop. Paint it, put some compartments inside, and you have a Table/carrier for your magic apparatus (or would the plural be apparati ? Thats my suggestion for you old and worn as it may be, I hope it helps. Steve zzz |

Although Not the table you are looking for, Gene Anderson has had a lot of success using felt covered cardboard that packs flat and looks great on stage.

There is a book called Working the Tables by David Drake which I've heard many good things about, it goes over the close up potential of tables, and gives some pointers on putting your routine together, as well as some example routines such as working with cards, ball bearings, pens, coins, etc. Just thought this may sound interesting to you if you were interested in table work.
