Want to use some for a dove pan production. Is flash paper a good idea or a bad idea? It seems that fire is considered a no-no for kids parties now.
Sorry, I would have used the search function, but it's down. |

I have tried to eliminate most pyro and fire effects from my magic shows. However, I still occasionally use fire in one or two particular routines, and smoke with the Cellulator. (Although the smoke powder is supposedly not considered to be pyro)
I am almost smoke-free now! Sometimes it depends on the venue where you are too. Some places may be more strict about fire permits/regulations than others.

If for no other reason, in today’s litigious society I would not use flame in children’s shows.
Yeah, I know you like the cool effect and the cool reaction, but it’s just not worth it. Children do what we do, not what we say, and since matches were invented kids have played with them with varying disastrous results. And flash-paper and string are not 100% foolproof or safe, I’ve seen eyebrows singed and carpets ruined. Nowadays many cities and counties insist on a pyrotechnic license. I’d leave any and all fire out of family shows, take the safe route, and I feel the same about sharp or dangerous looking objects, there is more than enough sensational material out there that’s great for young people without these. Hi Walt, thanks. Can you recommend any alternatives to flash paper in a dove pan cake/candy production. It seems that flash paper really gets a great reaction but I don't want to add fire to the show just because I wouldn't want my own kids thnking that fire is cool, so why would I want someone elses. I'm just trying to decide how to "initiate the magic" so to speak. I think that simply setting the load pan down wouldn't be magical enough.

Here's one idea.
Get throw streamers. Produce them from your hand (throw them), gather them up, and put them into the pan. It's a bit "flashy" without any fire. Throw streamers come in both white and multi-colour. I have personally used throw streamers in place of a flash wand I used to use at one time. Here's another idea. Get Dean Hankey's license for Invisible Magic Dust (reason will come in a minute). Talk about it in your show, and put the dust in the pan, and produce the item. Then you can sell IMD (Invisible Magic Dust) as a BOR (Back of Room) item after your show. Be sure to stress that it is imaginary, but that reading the book is lots of fun (and it is!) You don't want disappointed kids. - Donald P.S. I agree with Walt's thinking.

I use a dove pan in one of my shows for children. In it I ignite a small piece of flash paper. But the flame occurs in a magical way, and no matches are used. Think chemical reaction. To the kids, the small burst of flame just happens. You get a nice reaction, but nobody knows how it happened -- thus nothing to emulate.
As with anything of this nature though -- use good sense. Small amounts of flame can add a bit of..."flare" to a routine. But keep it well within reason. I'm not recommending anyone use fire in children's shows, mind you. There is always a risk involved in fire.

No flash paper it's a no--no.'even a tiny piece should not be used.
Streamers makes quite a mess. Don't create garbage for the customer, it's just more work for them. The magic dust makes more sense, something that sparkle. Tricky Ricky |

Flash paper is used by a huge franchise called Mad Science (madscience.org/) all the time.
By the way, I think we should clarify when speaking about children as to what age group we are referring to also. This would clear up some disagreements between people and make for clearer posts. |

I agree with Scott O. I use flash paper all the time, but I don't let the kids see me light it so it seems magical after they say the magic words. I think if you made it look like you were playing with matches, it would be a different story.

I like the Fire Book, and Flash Paper is OK if ignited by some other means than a match. (Not a flash Wand because it flys a distance)
Under no circumstance should you perform a routine involving fire which can be duplicated by a child. If it involves a match, it doesn't belong. A friend had when he was young took a pan put gas in it and lite it to produce a bird. (Dove Pan Routine) I use a little flash paper a little smoke dust, in my Wiz-Kote and I still use the Fire Book. I have lots of other flash products and fire gimmicks and don't use them. Of course there is exceptions, such as a fire Safety show where I use the Giant Match and a Giant Firecracker to deliver a message.

I am with Dennis on this one! The only thing that I use is the HOT BOOK as there is no way for kids to try to copy it. It gets a great reaction!

You can quickly gather up the unfurled streamers, and discard in the dove pan (or in your table). No mess left at all. I agree, don't create garbage for the customer. - Donald

While we are on the subject of fire and usages of it in a kid's show, I am trying a lot to stay as far away from it as posisble. This is just a personal thing for my wife and I and certainly each person must decide for themselves.
For me, we do so many outdoor shows that it is just very hard to control it in that environment. Also, more indoor venues we perform at these days simply do not allow it or you have to have a license and doumentation before being allowed to use any of it. With this in mind, I stay away from it as much as I can. However, I have a wiz-kote and use it in a lot of shows these days to great reactions. It is a comcical routine my wife and I developed that fits our stage personna well. I just do not like to use fire in it so I am working up alternative ideas for the smoke. This is where you guys can possible help out. Some ideas I have had is to place a mini-fogger on the back panel with vecro that can be trigered by myself or my wife to create the smoke effect but be much safer. Another idea is that there is a toy out on the market now that I saw that uses water vapor only. It is 100% safe but looks like smoke. It will also not trigger fire alarms. The problem is that I can not recall where I saw it. Any other ideas would be helpful. Thanks guys. Kyle

Kyle, you can use theatrical smoke (such as from theatrefx.com) in most ignitors (with glow plugs). Frankly, I am not an expert, and would recommend you contact the folks at the web site. They can help you rig your Wiz Kote. I would like to know about the water vapor toy . . . Also, I just got a fire flash "pot" in a hat which I am planning to use to produce a "burned" Rocky-like skunk in my opener (for family shows and audiences over about 7). Then I can put the Skunk into a production box "shower" and have him come out clean for zig zag, mindreading, etc.
To me this flash pot is akin to the flash book, in that the fire is of magical origin. Does anyone else use flash pots this way for children (but not very young)? If I show a certificate of insurance to prospective employers, will they let me use the flash pot (IBM insurance covers flash pots, but not "broader" flame effects). |

Hi Dennis, how would you suggest lighting the flash paper in the pan without a match?
