It's just that so many effects are created in the near past and something like the druids bloodsphere is only a couple of years old so the history lies in the imagination as well as knowing who developed the effect (Simon). Or the history of each component of the effect. the history of some Older seance effects is largely unknown or at least sketchy as to origins. The ouija board as we know it today is from the nineteenth century but its precursor, maybe the pendulum, maybe an inverted glass on a piece of paper is unclear. Anyway, some of you may have old books that describe an effect but that description may be that magician's presentation and not the origin itself. UNLESS..we're talking about the history of a specific effect..specifically. I never found the history of the haunted key so I made several up for the sake of patter and presentation. The origin of the haunted key may very well lie with a gypsy or two. Gypsy history...we could be surprised to find out how many beloved effects originated with them. We need a Gypsy magic history, but would they tell, even today? |

The Key to the Borley Rectory is a perfectly balanced key (and a duplicate unbalanced one). It looks like an old-fashioned skeleton key. The original key is no longer made, as I understand, and is very difficult to obtain.
Certain antique keys will also work, but you must try each one. (I am assuming that you are using an ungaffed method.) These were once easy to find (and cheap) in antique stores here in New Mexico. Then interior designers decided that antique keys were "in." Now they are expensive if you can find them at all.

Over the past 5+ years I've used the haunted key in almost EVERY performance I've done this for the paying public with presentations revised for seances, bizarre magick, mentalism and even kid shows. This, in my opinion, is one of the strongest pieces I do ... at least based upon the resonse I get and what my wife says (she's actually a tough critic).
I think the secret lies in how SLOW the turn is performed. I also DON'T use the one commonly sold. I think it looks inferior to a genuine antiqued key, even when aged. I spent a half hour going through a huge drawer of keys (literally a dresser drawer full of old keys) at an antique show several of years ago until I found 4 back-ups for the one I always use. Each time I noticed someone looking at me while I was finding a suitable key, I looked at them and said I was looking for keys which still "contained the memory of their owners". I feel bad that I freaked out a few people ... NOT!!! Dave |

Richard Osterlind has some wonderful work on the Haunted Key. In Richard's hands, the does just what we are pretending it does. An amazing piece of theater he creates with it.

What do you think about the "Ghostly HAUNTED KEY" form HP?
It's big and looks older. |

They both look incredible and the one I have looks authentic enough for my presentation. I believe it's a genuine antique. If I didn't have the MC version I would probably buy the ghostly haunted key from HP. If you search some antique stores you may find a similar key that is balanced for this effect. Many are. I just looked at the GHK again at hocus-pocus and I may go ahead and get it too. |
