Prof. Piper,
Thanks for sharing that transforming and heartbreaking story. Truly made my day! As a social worker, I am always amazed at the staggering number of people who have deeply entrenched economic hardship, family difficulties, or untreated mental illness (due to this country's shamefully stunted social policies) and in general I am a proponent of compassion before judgment. Years ago I had a rule of never giving out cash, but nowadays I just go with my gut and my heart. If I give a couple of bucks to a scam artist on occasion, it won't break the bank, and I'd rather help someone out a bit instead of making assumptions. Anyway, thanks again. I, too, hope those kids ended up safe. Seth |

Louie Anderson the comedian/host (I know, fairly forgettable) once put it this way: you see a guy trying to get up after falling into the gutter. What's the right thing to do? Do you ask him if it's his fault that he fell? Do you make sure he really needsw a hand up? Do you not help him unless you're sure he won't fall again? Or do you just help him?

My pleasure sharing pal...It's how we all learn, right? From each other. This all took place in 1994, so God only knows where or how those kids are doing today.... And yeah, I still pray for them...All this time later. Prof. Piper

Thanks everyone for the kind words on this thread and the PM's as well! It was quite an experience!
I'm actually now thinking that some of these stories might really make an interesting premise for a book... I'll have to give it a bit more thought! Thanks again for the encouraging words! Lyndel |

I remember when I lived in NYC, I used to work at a store (Alfred Dunhill of London's) which was located in Rockefeller Center. Across the street, there was a woman who had cerebal palsey. You knew this because every few minutes she would bellow out; "Please help me, I have cerebal palsey." Eventually, they did a story on her in th Daily News. Turned out she did indeed have cerebral palsey, her brother was putting her out there on the corner to beg for money! *yikes*
