P.S. To everyone by especially you performers who are trying to do public shows with less than 3 years experience
If you haven't gotten these books they are far more valuable than any effects you will every purchase READ THE BOOKS READ THE BOOKS READ THE BOOKS - then read them again "Our Magic" by Nevil Maskelyne & David Devant (out of print but a copy shows up on ebay occasionally) "Books of Wonder 1 & 2" by Tommy Wonder "Tarbell's Course in Magic" volumes 1 to 8 (more effects than you'll ever do but more importantly information about performing) The Fitzkie trilogy (The Trick Brain and Magic by Misdirection are hard to find) "Showmanship for Magicians" "The Trick Brain" "Magic by Misdirection" Denny Haney's lecture notes http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=007077 (the best $12 investment you will ever make) For the future when you are ready to try a large production How To Produce Your Own Theater Show by John Pyka YOU MUST READ THESE BOOKS TO BE THE BEST PERFORMER THAT YOU CAN BE Maybe not all of them at once, but if you are performing you owe it to your audiences to be the absolute best These books will help you I can not stress enough how any of these books are more important than any effect you will every buy Effects don't make you, learning how to present them does </climbing off my soapbox> Please come back in a few months after you've read some of these (if you haven't already) and share with us how they improved your thinking and performance

I agree about reading and studying but can't you reccomend some books that are a little easier to find???? (Except maybe for Tarbell)
How about: Magic and Showmanship The Amateur Magicians Handbook Strong Magic Mike |

Hey Mike,
I can't personally recommend Strong Magic. Got a copy of "Our Magic" second edition printed in 1946 off Ebay for $50. Well worth the investment. Showmanship for Magicians is here "http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?client=35458321&action=detail&item=001076" Denny carries a lot of books, sometimes he gets in hard to find used stuff, it's where I found my copy of Magic by Misdirection. The Books of Wonder you can find about anywhere http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Boo......G=Search Am sure there are a lot of great books I've missed but for a performer with a year or two experience the books I've listed are invaluable. An advantage to starting later in life is we may not get too hooked on buying the next "great effect" but again reading, learning and studying are far more important than any new effect that can be bought (Tarbell and the Books of Wonder have more than enough effects to build an outstanding show)

I started magic when Hasbro came out with the 'Magic Works' tricks (I was probably around 10-12). After buying a few of those, I started going to a shop in Salem, OR to buy tricks, get lessons, and hang-out with other's like myself and trade secret's. I unfortunatly moved around a lot a few years after that, and started loseing touch with the magic community, and have recently started practicing card magic specificly.
I do intend on getting other tricks eventually, but the only shop around where I live is in San Fransico (about 45 min to an hours drive), so once I get some money saved I plan on going out to increase my aresenal. |

Found "Our Magic" in ebook form for $8 at http://www.lybrary.com/our-magic-p-138.html
And the Fitzkie Trilogy http://www.lybrary.com/dariel-fitzkee-m-54.html It may not be as nice as having the actual books but you can always print a copy or store it on an ebook reader. |

Thanks for the links to Lybrary Steve. I don't particularly like ebooks but at those prices I may pick them up sooner than I would have purchased the hard bound versions.

If you join The Learned Pig Project (which is free) you can download Our Magic, the Fitzkie Trilogy, and a ton of other e-books for no cost (to include the Jinx which I am enjoying reading right now).
You can apply for membership by going to http://thelearnedpig.freeservers.com/ |

I just started magic a couple years ago (I'm now 34) and love it. My wife loved it for the first several months I got into it, now she is kindly putting up with my obsession.
I developed some decent card skills and am now working on mentalism and kid show effects. For me, it seems mentalism gets the best audience reactions. Since I mainly perform for friends and family, they think the tricks (or routines) I do are kind of neat (I get the impression many start from the assumption that magic is corny). However, when I present an effect as a mentalism effect, they seem much more intrigued and I hear them talking about what happened long after the trick is over. They know I’m not pretending to be psychic, but their not sure some other factor besides slight-of-hand contributed to the illusion (such as pulse reading, intuition, psychology, persuasion, body language, etc.). I am also a fairly new father (16 month old daughter) and now hang around a bunch of friends with kids. So I started working on kid show type tricks. My sister asked if I could perform at a birthday party for her twin 6 year old girls next month; I agreed. As it turns out, the birthday party has grown in size (joint party with other kids) and there will be upwards of 100 kids. I’m franticly working on my routine and learning balloon sculpting. Should be interesting. Anyway, starting magic later in life has been very enjoyable for me. |

JC,
How are you able to offer these ebooks for free? I assumed Lybrary.com had rights to them. A lot of your story sounds similar to me, (although my kids are all grown I have lots of grandkids, nieces and nephews that have asked me to perform birthday shows for them.) I too lean a bit towards mentalism and am hoping to put together a professional act. Mike |

They are able to provide the books for free because the material is so old that the copyright has expired (now in public domain) or they received permission from the author to post the books. Good luck with working out a mentalism act. That is a long term goal of mine also. JC |

JC Johns,
Sorry to hijack the thread but taking the printed material for free for The Learned Pig (or anywhere) is a little sketchy (at least from my perspective)

I know as a magician, I have often heard of people stealing material, copying CDs illegally, and learning copyrighted tricks from Youtube. All of this is bad and fails to reimburse the creators. But remember, all printed material (and other intellectual property) has a self-life and eventually enters the public domain (not owned by anyone). Public domain material can be obtained for free. Material can also be obtained for free if the author gives permission. The Learned Pig has been around for a while (do a search in the Café). From what I have seen, they do not put up copyrighted material and if they make a mistake, they remove the material promptly. For example, in the below post, Lybrary.com informed The Learned Pig that a book on the Pig was licensed to Lybrary; the Pig quickly removed the material. Both parties were very amicable to one another. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=159 Cheers |

I've been a member of the Learned Pig for years and Marco has always been ethical with what is available there. Everything there is either public domain or there with full permission. Don't worry about working with any of those books. It is an increadible resource.
Thanks, Richard |

A post relevant to the topic title I hope
By the way, how long would it take for a person to call himself a magician. With 3 to 5 hours of serious practice a week on sleight of hands, performance techniques etc...... Most renowned magicians started their career during their teens.....except for few How about those who started late..... Any inspirations.....stories.....anyone???? |
