I was playing in Cologne last weekend, in front of the Dom, and heard a funny Busker´s Story. An American `Statue Act´, Jeramia Costello just `bombed´! He told me his story.
He had been playing in Ireland, and a friend said, "If you really want to make the bread, you´ve got to go to Germany. Cologne, in front of the Dom,.. millions!" "But I don´t speak a word of german", responds Jeramia. "No problem, there´s ONE phrase in german,... it kills `ems. I´ll teach ya". Two weeks later, he´s standing in Cologne. Sunday, nice family crowd. His `Statue Act´ is an `Elvis´,.. when folks give, he goes into an "Ain´t Nothing Like a Hound-Dog" impression. After about an hour, he had a nice crowd and thought to close it up,...lay down his `one phrase´. "Vielen Dank! Vielen Dank! Ich bin ein Brust Warze!!"" ,....there was a hush,..everyone just kinda looked wierd at him,.. famalies gathered up there kids,... in two minutes the place was empty,... not a drop. "Thank you! Thank you! I´m a breast nipple!" ,...Busker´s make the best friends!! all the best, gallagher |

I learned a saying in the marines: "Buddy" is only half the word.
Nobody ever explains the other half...but I always took it to mean that the second half of the word rhymed a whole lot with "trucker" Sounds like you painted pozing pal learned that...at the cost of a decent hat |

The last time I was in Cologne, the Domplatz was full of incompetent crate slugs and Russian accordion players.
The accordion players were pretty decent. The crate slugs don't have much imagination. There was a blue man on a stationary bike who thought he was original. Nice try.

"Crate Slugs"..I do remember a time many years ago here in San Francisco when "Socks" worked the Wharf. He was all dressed in white with a red bowtie. When he got the money, the tie would spin. He was awesome. Nowadays..ok, I'll behave.

One of the other guys on the forum gave me the term "crate slug." I think it was Kondini.
BTW, a long time ago, I wrote a booklet called How to be a Professional Entertainer or Everything Your Mother Should Have Told You About Working a Gig, But She Didn't Know It, Either. One of the things in it concerned the very idea of learning foreign phrases. I'll pass it along, because I don't want you to have to buy the book, just to learn this one thing. There are people in every culture who take delight in embarrassing foreigners or people they perceive to be competition. So, when asked how to say something in a foreign language, they will tell you something that is either a string of nonsense syllables or something that is dirty. Anytime anyone gives you a foreign phrase to use in your show, find a priest or a rabbi who speaks the language, explain your situation to him and ask him what the phrase you just learned means. It will save you a lot of embarrasment.

Sorry about that, Chance! Mea culpa. With the search function down, it's hard to find the really cool titbits!
