The name of the book is;
"TO LURE WITH SPECTACLE AND OUR MYSTERIOUS SOCIETY" you can check out more about it here; http://leapinglizardsmagic.com/lure_with_spectacle.htm I work as a street performer and I do parlor manipulation. when I was learning to work the street I noticed that there was a lot of close up trick material available but when I went looking for parlor manips to do surrounded under street performing conditions there wasn't a lot of info. sure there was rope work, but I noticed a lot of the manips were designed to be done from an audience directly in front, but on the street the operator is surrounded. so after some years of working on the street trying to do parlor manip, I accumulated quite a bit of material. this material is also good for indoors at a payed gig and the performer can now work any conditions in the venue...surrounded with or with out interaction. when guys who are booked inside see my work the first time, the thing they notice is that the work is done differently and even looks less "amazing" or less technical, but the fact is the conditions on the street change the way you must operate and limit the work that can be done, causing the performer to create new stuff. strangely enough the street also has the reverse effect sometimes causing certain tricks to look much more amazing, because they are live and surrounded under street conditions. on my youtube site; http://youtube.com/user/JimmyTalksalot I have some examples of some of the work. please before you make a snap judgment, watch many of the different clips...if you have the time. I have a new book coming out that is a "how to" book for street performing and a an introduction into the world of being a magician. I also have an ebook product line coming out that teaches these parlor manip tricks and routines that a person will need when putting a show together for the street. here's a youtube commercial clip; http://youtube.com/watch?v=lMbfV5tnsbw in street performing many believe that one must clap and cheer the audience or tell a lot of jokes or stop every passer by, almost hustling them to watch a trick....i believe that what we do as parlor manipulators is strong enough to stop them with out these other methods, but they must be the right tricks done a certain way to grab and hold the attention of a passer by. please visit me at jimmytalksalot.com if you got the time or interest. this is where I am selling the ebooks of routines. your pal jimmy |

I have always thought of myself as a parlor or stage manipulator. I have worked indoors for many years and have loved so much I'm always looking for more possible venues to perform these types of things.
the street has enabled me to be free to try any and all material as to where it seems indoors in the states it is more regulated. I still miss the indoors but not enough to go back and indure the regulations. I have posted this here in the hopes that it will hit a chord with some of those frustrated with some of the troubles of of trying to pursue parlor and stage manips as a profession. I work more then ever before with out all the hassles of booking and following the rules of the paying house or agents. infact I am booked all the time right off the streets, but now it's on my terms. they see what I can do and they want it at their venue, and they know my value. I can afford to turn it down or take it if it seems good. |

Jimmy,
I have come across your videos many times and I must say you have inspired me more to go out and have fun with busking. I recently moved to NYC and I have been debating if I should take up busking. But I don't want to fall into the same cups and balls effect everyone is doing. Love your videos and your book is on my list of must reads. Jacob

Jacob,
Start busking and take up whatever you feel like taking up. It makes you a better entertainer almost immediately. You will learn more about how to entertain a crowd in 10 busking efforts than you would doing strolling for 10 years. Who cares if it's cups and balls or rings or whatever. Pick something you're drawn to, like Jimmy's ideas and go out there and just do it. Once you're out there, keep a keen eye out for what is NOT working and at what points in your routines people walk. Make notes. Adjust and go out and experiment again. You'll learn a lot very quickly about yourself. Some good. Some bad.

Jacob,
Who's doing cups and balls out here? I don't know that there are even very many magicians busking at all out here. Maybe the occasional card guy at Washington Square Park. Really good stuff Jimmy, I'm interested in reading some of your work. Eddie

MajikAbra,
you should ask who's doing cups in ny on the street in the sidewalk shuffle. I hope you are serious about my book especially if you are busking, everyone that has read it has said they improved or finally understood how to busk with out any more difficulty. also it explains who we are and the life we chose. have you seen my blog? |
