I know I'll misspell their names but I'll give it a shot. Timo Marc from Germany won the Golden Lions Head award with a MARVELOUS manipulation act that used a TV screen. A gentleman from Korea, (I have no idea what his name was, sorry) won the Sarmoti award, which is the people's choice. He featured beautiful card manipulation that started very slowly and got faster and faster.
The teen contest winner was also a card manipulator from Korea, Hun Lee. Everyone agreed that he belonged on the adult show as it was so original. He produced card boxes! Think multiplying billiard balls, but with card boxes. I believe 2nd place went to Trigg Burrage from Louisiana for a great manip/juggling/mime act, and 3rd went to a charming young girl from the College of Magic in South Africa. Her act basically told the story how the generosity of the college and Tommy Wonder changed her life. It really brought tears to my eyes. Close-up contest went like this. There was a tie for 3rd, I'm not sure of who placed where, but the names for 3rd place were Michael Saharin, (also from the College of Magic) Edsel Chiu from San Francisco, and Café' member Bill Koch. (Way to go Billy Boy!) And 1st place was Johann Stahl from Sweden. He had a beautiful routine with a coin and marker that got many gasps from the audience. Other highlights of the convention were the Encore benefit show. This featured Mac King, Rich Bloch, Jeff McBride, Fielding West, Ron Lucas, and Lance Burton wearing Mac's "Cloak of invisibility." My favorite act on this show was a brilliant Marionette artist, I hope someone can give his name. He had a marionette that was the spitting image, and performed the act of Carl Ballantine. The close-up show as also great. Norman Beck, Jon Armstrong, Paul Vigil, Giacomo Bertini and Stephen Bargatze. What a crew. Many of us realized that funniest duo in Vegas isn't Penn and Teller, it's not Johnny and Pam, but Psychic Tanya and Stephen Bargatze. They had the audience in tears. It would be a real shame if these two never work together again. I laughed so hard they had me in tears. I'm sure pics will be up on the site shortly. When I have pics on my blog I'll post a note here. |

Scott Land is the name of the Carl Ballantine puppeteer. He is a very accomplished performer, sculptor and all around nice guy.

Yep, that's him. My favorite bit of his was Helio the clown. It was probably the most magical thing I saw all week at the convention.

Did sterling place? His acts are always so good!
I saw stephen bargatze last summer and he had us in tears alone, I can't even imagine how funny he would have been with Psychic Tanya! I have always wanted to go to WMS! and if I may ask....would it be worth it for me to go next year? magic mike |

Sterling's act, while technically flawless fell flat. The first few minutes had a video screen of many masters like Cardini, McBride etc. and Sterling copying their signature act. He's a great guy with loads of talent, I just think this was a bad idea. He'll be back though.

The young lady's name was Monica Nyakatya and it was not Tommy Wonder per se that changed her life but magic as indicated by a Box of Wonders - not necessarily Tommy's but magical wonders in general. Edsel Chiu and Michael Saharin tied for 3rd place. Bill Koch was 2nd place and Johan Stahl was 1st. Derek Delgaudio was also on the close up show. |

Hey Bill,
You guys did a great job with the seminar. (As always.) Thanks for the proper rundown on the winners. (Who won the bowling again?) The reason I mentioned Tommy in describing Monica's act was Craig from the College of Magic told me that the floating table she used was his and he donated it to the school when he visited. I'll send you and Becki some pics when I get them all sorted out. |

Hi Pepka
To clarify ... Tommy visited the College in 2002 He was a wonderful supporter - and donated the table to the COM subsequently thereafter which is the one Monica used in her show. Rgds Craig |

Khayelitsha girl's magic transforms her into a princess
May 06, 2008 Edition 2 - Cape Argus - CAROLINE SMITH IT IS often a little girl's dream to become a princess with the aid of a magic fairy godmother. Monica Nyakatya achieved that dream, but eliminated the middle man and used her own magic instead. Nyakatya, 17, of Khayelitsha, performed in the International Teen Stage Magic Contest at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas. Her Cinderella-esque act was awarded third place and brought the audience to tears. "My show was a story about the street children in Cape Town and all the adventures they go through. When you see street children they are always carrying something, like a bag. Their whole life is inside that bag. I had a box of wonders and all of the stuff coming out of that box transformed me into a beautiful girl." Nyakatya worked for two years on perfecting her stage act, but it didn't keep her from feeling nervous. It was her first visit to the US. She is in her sixth and final year at the College of Magic in Cape Town. The school's Magic in the Community Outreach project is backed by illusionists Siegfried & Roy as well as local government departments. Craig Mitchell, an instructor, has watched Nyakatya growth since the beginning. "Monica came to us literally not being able to speak a word of English," said Mitchell. "She was not very sure of herself. It was wonderful to watch her blossoming into a vibrant performer on stage. I've seen her transformation from a little girl to a lady." In the beginning, it was her neighbour who inspired her to take up magic. "I had a neighbour who finished school (at the College of Magic) a long time ago. I would see him doing magic on television and in the newspapers," she said. Growing up, she would use her cousins as a test audience and occasionally pull tricks on them. She also attends Wynberg Senior Secondary School and is in Grade 12. "I want to be something in the business world," she said, "But I also want to study and do magic." She plans on competing next year with the same show, but will give a performance in the Stars of Comedy and Magic show in Cape Town on August 30. |

So much work goes on behind the scenes at any convention - my work just happens in front of the registrants - there is an entire team of brilliant people who bring it all together.

The high individual score was one David Pepka aka PEPKA with a score of 202 ... however he should have been disqualified because he did not wear a red hat while bowling ... Pepka's team also had the high team game score with a score of 539. Congratulations!! |

Shameless self-promotion at it's best! For anyone interested, I've posted a few pics from the seminar at my blog, http://www.forentertainmentpurposesonly.blogspot.com For some reason, it took forever to load only these few, I'll probably have a few more later.
