Hello folks,
I am in total confusion about editing music. I tried looking through topics and that got me even more confused. Here is what I am trying to do: I want to take a song, have a slight sound effect part way through, then, after the sound effect, have part of a second song play, then sound effect, and part of a third song play, then sound effect, and end of original song play. Can someone who is familiar with audacity let me know how or if this is possible. In simple terms, I am doing a comedy straitjacket effect and want parts of 3 different songs to play during a 2 minute time period with a sound effect between the changing of each song. All the songs I have on itunes -some purchased, some from my cd's. Any help is appreciated - you can pm also as I check back quite often throughout the day! Thanks in advance for any help! Chad |

It is possible to do what you want with Audacity. Since you have a sound effect for each transition, you do not have to worry as much about the smoothness transitions. You can place the three songs and two sound effects on different tracks and, via trial and error, time-shift the music and effects until they sound right. A website with enough tutorials to get you started is http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/tutorials.html.
Even though you have purchased the cds or mp3s, do you have performance rights for the music that you are using? |

You would want to be in Multitrack view. You will then see multiple tracks. Right click on track on and click Insert, track from file. Select the song you want. Now do the same with tracks 2,3,4, etc.
Now you need to make sure the volume envelopes are selected: Click View, select Volume Envelopes. This will allow you fade the tracks at any point you wish. To do this you move your cursor to the top of the track and you will see a plus sign show up. Left click and hold as you bring the volume settings down at that point. Left click on the green line and you can make a point, which is a white block. This will allow you to decide at what rate to drop the volume on that track. Doing the same on track two, but instead bring the volume of the track all the way down, then bring it up at the place you want it to fade in, with reference to where track one is fading out. Play with this and you can mix, cross fade, even mash songs together. Hope that help. Kevin

Thanks for the help folks! I am experimenting with it right now! I am using mostly Arthur Stead's music from his cd's for entertainers! Great stuff!
Thanks again! Chad |
