Before starting table hopping I had a simple idea what table hopping magicians do for the venue, we are (very low key) food and liquor salesmen. What little services do you think are important for magicians in a restaurant. For example, patrons at my veranda may get lost in the shuffle. They may expect food service which isn't available and restaurant policy isn't clearly marked. What services, such as special theme magic, makes a table hopper important to a restaurant.

Well, if no nobody else will answer I will take a shot at this question.
I suppose that we are the best advertisment that a restaurant could have. Think about that... we tell maybe 5 or 10 people that we do not know about where they can come to watch us perform three or four times a week. Do you suppose that an add in the yellow pages brings to any restaurant this kind of exposure? A restaurant will spend $300 dollars a month on an add in the yellow pages. Think about that when negotiating a fee for your work. Jim

Jim makes a good point, about advertising.
A table hopper is also often the only direct connection between the customer and the restaurant -- so he or she should know at least something about the operation. If a customer wants to know where the washrooms are, or how long a wait is expected, then the performer should be able to tell him or her. (You can probably draw the line there; advice on food and drink is the territory of the wait staff.) In short, the table hopper's main job is to make the customer feel comfortable. That's all -- but that's a LOT! |

As someone who eats out a lot - let me make one more point.
SERVICE - on your busy nights where you have people waiting to be seated - or waiting for thier food - THAT is the time to show them a trick. Take the customer's mind off of the ... "Where the heck is my food?" question.... |

IM with David on this, a magician definitely keeps the customers occupied while waiting to be seated or for their food. Her in Australia we have restaurants called The Black Stump, they all had magicians once as the wait to be seated could be lengthy.
Apart from that it sets the restaurant apart, great food, nice atmosphere is good but what about great food, nice atmosphere AND entertainment. Cheers Billy James |

What services do magicians provide to the restaurant?
Here is a small example. This past Sunday, while doing my thing, I noticed a family being seated with a not too happy 4 to 5 year old. He was a cranky little fellow giving his parents all sorts of trouble, and an obvious disruption to the other patrons. I walked over, welcomed them and tried to interact a little with the child verbally. It was obvious he didn't want me there. I then went into my sponge ball routine very quickly, and the crying stopped almost immediately. Soon he was laughing, well, because he was making the magic happen with my wand. His parents were happy, and so was the management. I got my wand back after some serious misdirection. Just one example, but a good one that day.
