So, I want to start doing some magic with birds, but I have a cat that would go crazy and probably kill the bird, any tips on how to keep this from happening?

Cats are funny. You never know what they'll do. I had a cat that was fine with my birds in cages or while I was practicing. If the bird landed on the floor however, it was fair game.
There are several options for you to be sure. One is to keep the birds separated from the cat. Keep them in a separart room or in the garage. (the garage would be preferred do to health and cleanliness issues). The other is to keep them separated while you practice. If you are lucky enough to have a cat as I did, then there should be no problem, however, if left alone in the same room, cats are curious and quick.

The cat is the worst animal of the world. Eat the birds, eat the fish, always are in war with the dogs, abuse of the rabbits, give allergies to the childrens and are treacherous animals. If you see I hate the cats, but well not the whole world has to be like me. If the cat is small you can accustom them to the birds placing it in his cage ... if the cat is adult place the birds in other room or in a cat proof cage (Parrots one)
Thanks, Hansel!

All it takes is one wrong move, on the part of a bird, for the cat's hunting instincts to kick in. A cat may be fine with the bird, for years, and suddenly kill the bird. Keep the cats and birds separate.

I have several doves, a rabbit and a cat, the cat never takes any notice of the other animals when they are in their cages, but when I get them out she (the cat) watches them very closely, ive started to either shut the cat out of the room I'm practising in or let the cat outside,
it will work but you just have to be careful it doesn't matter how trained or how well behaved the cat is it sill can be unpredictable. hope this helps, Dave Major M.M.C. Member Of The Magic Circle, London |

I grew my kitten up watching my birds in the bird cage everyday. When she became a full grown cat there were no problems between the two side by side.
This is going to sound silly, but it is true. After I made my cat appear in my show one of my birds would fly over to attack the cat by flapping her wings on the cat. The cat would still stay on her stand without jumping down, but try to move over to put space between the two of them. The only one I could not train to get along with my cat was my ferret. |
