Does Bob's "Triple Transpo" use a standard set of ANY CSB?
Could you do it with Porpers "Poker Chip Surprise"? |

Many pro's use 2 copper and one silver or poker chip surprise in their routines ( check out Paul Green's wonderful routine on his "In The Trenches DVD or Bill Malones "keeping my money safe" rotuine ( it's Dave Neighbors routine ) from his Here I Go again DVD set ). They would work with Bob's routine. But.....the popularity of C/S/B is that one coin has a hole in the middle. My opinion is that it makes a more deceptive trick ( unless you're Paul Green or Bill Malone;-)

For those that have the dvds, just wanted to hear your thoughts on Bob's version of Red Hot Mamma. I personally think the bits at the end where he uses the jumbo 3 and a half of clubs and 52 on 1 cards distracts from the overall effect. The revelation of Red Hot Mamma is so strong at the end that performing an almost gag like effect at the end of that diminishes the impact of the initial revelation.
Just my thoughts. Let me know what you think. |

I thought the whole Red Hot Momma version was a bit confusing to be honest. The spectators seemed a bit lost as well.

I use "Chicago Opener / "Red Hot Mama" in every performance, and I have never liked Whit Hayden's version of this. Many people swear by it, but I think that it over-complicates what is a perfect card trick.
I still love the Bob Sheet's DVDs though, and Whit Hayden is one of the best. Robert |

Well, while the Chicago Surprise and the Chicago Opener have some things in common, there are just so many differences between the two of them that it's almost a mistake the compare them. One is a two-parter with two different but generally straight-forward effects, whereas the other involves a lot more interaction between the magician and spectator. One's tailored towards the magician-in-trouble conflict, whereas the other is more of a magician-vs-spectator conflict. Totally different dynamics if you ask me.
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=ch......search=# Notice how the second half of the effect mirrors Fechter's "I've Got A Surprise For You" (The "Surprise" in "Chicago Surprise") in terms of the way the magician manipulates the spectator's expectations. The general idea in the original is they pick a card (card A), it's lost, you show card B, it's wrong, card B is set aside, you produce a card from the pocket, they expect it's now card A, but you show it to be card B again, the spectator is then forced to look at the previously eliminated card B, and it's now card A. Change the card-from-pocket to the blue-backed card, and you've got the same sort of thing going on. It's a good trick, and I could see why Whit wanted to incorporate it. |

Ah, the bunnies. I don't know what it is, but if you've ever performed them, you know what Bob Sheets says is too true. When I was working restaurants, they were a constant request.
My question, where can I get the set like the ones he uses? I had a couple of sets made by Irv Weiner a zillion years ago and have since had to do with Goshman's, but these are way cuter. Any help would be appreciated. Also have to agree that the lack of audience enthusiasm was a downer. There are only two people who can make me laugh to the point of tears and Bob Sheets is one of them. The magic on these DVD's is great but it's too bad the audience wasn't with it. |

I think he mentions where he got the bunnies on the DVD. I didn't catch it the first time, either. Not into bunnies, myself, but I know he's right about this.

Eddie Ace's rabbits are the best hands down. I haven't used anything else for over 20 yrs. I hoard them becasue Eddie hasn't been as active in making them the last several years so they can be hard to get. His wife was ill for a very long time before she passed and his health hasn't been the best. I have a source and every time they get them in I buy 2 or 3 sets. The original set comes with 2 adults and 4 babies. I buy a supplemental set of 4 babies and add 2 of them to the original set for 6 babies. Then I have 2 left for my next set. Also, they are pricey. Around $40.00 the last time I checked.

While I enjoyed these DVD's, and I'm a long-time fan of Bob Sheets, I do have one nit to pick...
Bob has a line/gag he does (I believe it's part of his 3 ball routine) where he makes a crack about Tourette's syndrome. I have a 10 year old son who's becomming interested in magic. He also has Tourette's. Thankfully, his case is very mild. I had planned on watching these DVD's with him, but I fortunately watched them myself first. I'm pretty sure my son would not have found this completely gratuitous bit very funny at all. Larry Zaslow

Larry, name your favorite movie and I can find something that is offensive in it.
My family and I been through tragedy and sadness and there would be jokes in movies, TV, comedy clubs, etc. that would touch on what was happening to us and I thought it was funny. My Dad passed away from a long battle against cancer. I saw Andy Dick on Martha Stewart during Dad's battle. Andy was helping her cook and he tasted this food coloring and said "hmmm. It tastes like cancer" and I couldn't stop laughing. I guess I could have written a letter saying how sad I was to hear this type of humor on a cooking show as it made me cry and think of my poor dad. Nobody was funnier than my Dad about his battles. He always said "life is funny. What else am I going to do, sit here and cry all day?" I worked with a lady that lost her husband and sent out an e-mail with a link to touching images about life and it had some train images. Someone wrote her saying how sad it made her because they had a family member killed by a train. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In a p.c. correct society, someone will always be offended by something.

What in the world is wrong with these forums??? People can have their own opinions and there is no need, for someone to get up on defensive stance, everytime he doesn't agree with someone else. We have allready lost too many of the big time pros with these arguments, that have nothing important to add to the conversation.

Hi Chris:
I appreciate your point, but perhaps I wasn't as clear as I could have been. I'm a cancer survivor myself, and I'm not interested in getting into a discussion as to whose family has suffered the most. I am not offended by cancer jokes, and I make them myself. I also understand that I wouldn't give a crap about Sheets' joke, and probably would have found it funny, had my son not had Tourette's. I'm obviously super-sensitive to this particular issue as my son deals constantly with the anxiety of being made fun of, which children often, unfortunately, do. But my son is 10, and I almost played the DVD for him without having previewed it myself first. I didn't think I had to preview a magic DVD before my son saw it, but I was mistaken. Sheets is a consumate performer. He's teriffically funny, and he has amazing chops. As I said, I've been a fan of his for years. I saw him live at one of the World Magic Summits down in Washington DC, and he was the highlight of the convention for me. That being said, the cheap Tourette's remark is completely gratuitous. He's funnier, and more clever than that. Incidentally, I recommend these DVDs highly for the quality of the material and the excellent instruction. Best, Larry Zaslow

Larry, I'm sorry to hear of your son's illness and I think there is nothing sadder in life than children afflicted with evil diseases.
I'm only pointing out that in a politically correct atmosphere, almost anything can be viewed as offensive to someone. You and my Dad, GOD bless you both, made jokes about your illnesses, which for my dad, was his way of coping. Allot of people would be highly offended by his making light of a terminal illness. I once put on my glasses and said "I'm almost blind without these" and BAM...this lady says her sister is blind and that is not something to joke about. I wanted to blind her as well ( that's a joke ). In the bunnies routine, Bob called the girl a slut. Did you find that offensive? I couldn't stop laughing. But..SOMEONE will find that so offensive, they will sell their set and never look at another Bob Sheets DVD. I don't think you can look at 90% of magic DVD's and not find something that someone will find offensive. If Magicians use humor, someone will be offended. Again, I'm sorry to hear of your son's battle and wish him the greatest success in dealing with the stigma of such an illness. Best wishes, Chris

I've watched the set twice since receiving it, and I plan to post a more detailed review after I practice the material and give it a good shot at an audience. I do know that the presentation will probably not work for me - like the ones commented above (including the "slut" comment), and the presentation in Intuition. You need "that" performing persona to pull it off. |

That's Bob's style and he can sell it. But, I'm not offended by it.
I've worked at and been in comedy clubs where some folks you can tell are offended by the material. Why they would go to a comedy club I have no idea. Some people are offended by magic. Yep, perform enough and someone will complain about you.
