I'm curious, some magicians are billed as "master magicians". Is this something bestowed upon them? Is it a result of a competition? How does one go about becoming one?

There are a lot of ways; The real way is to become a Mastre, ala Jeff McBride, through many years of dedication, practice, study and actually mastering your craft.

The easy way (which a lot of people do) is to just call yourself [i]Master{/i]!

Just be carefull if people want to see proof.

Talk the talk, walk the walk.

Good luck!

It, in most cases, is bestowed upon them by themselves. There is no real authoratative, or recognized mechanism for this title. Lance Burton claims it based on receiving the "mantle", again while this has a history, there is no real authority that determined it in the first place. I suppose nobody wants to be known as an apprentice or journeyman magician.

As much as I like Master Magician Lance Burton, a lot of what he does is done by many other "regular" magicians on stages all over America. He has used the title for so long now though - it just seems natural to use it with him.

If your respected peers call you a Master, then you're a Master. If you're the only one calling yourself a Master Magician, then Poseur is probably a more appropriate term...

I once asked a "Master Magician" who was out on the lecture tour that exact question. His answer? Just call yourself one!

After forty-seven years of magic, I'm looking forward to moving up to "Journeyman".

How much longer will it take?

There are people who come in third in the local magic club competition who call themselves "Prize-winning magician"s.

It's just a title. If you feel it gives you more prestige from the audience's point of view, use it. Just be sure to be able to back it up. Considering the frequency that most people actually see magicians, they won't have many people to compare you to, so you can probably get away with a lot.

A friend of mine is a certified Master Magician. He belonged to a non-magic living history club called the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) One of this clubs highest awards is called a Laurel is given for exemplary skill in the arts. He received his for his skill in performing magic. Recipients of this honor are allowed to use the title of Master which he frequently does even though he hasn't belonged to the group for many, many years.

I'm amazed how many " master magicians" there are out there who are basically just getting started in magic. Their websites rant about how they are breaking new ground in magic but you see the same photo used on every page of their site and their gallery or video page always says...." coming soon". They post their schedule as World Tours on their website as well. LOL

Best,

Tim
