With gas prices having risen to a staggering $3.89/gallon where I live, I am noticing that this is rapidly becoming a major, ongoing expense like phone, gas (the type in your home), electric and rent. A large chunk of my budget is now allocated towards it.
Now I find myself sacrificing and planning carefully to "minimize" the impact, if that's possible. I don't go out to restaurants anymore, except for one day a week with friends I've been doing this with for over a decade. Even then, I try to only choose items I can afford for under $10. I don't make trips up to my local magic shop like I used to and have even held off purchases both at the shop and elsewhere because of this issue. So what are you sacrificing to lower the impact of rising gas prices? What will you do when the prices keep going up, as they inevitably will?

Gas prices here where I live in Florida averages $3.65/gallon at this moment and I realize it's on the rise. I have backed off of "spur of the moment" road trips. If the demand for gasoline goes down then the price will follow suit my friend. Only until we the people realize this and change our driving habits, will these high gas prices level off.
Cardamagically, Dom. :)

Like the rent, it is what it is. I do what I do.
SWe live an hour away from Disneyland. Thoyugh we have passes and get in at no cost it still costs us $25 to drive there. What do we do? We go to Disneyland and get our $25 worth. We have already ben over $4 a gallon. Currently $3.92. Out of my control or circle of influence...just something else that sucks.

My fiance and I moved closer to work, only about five minutes away now. After doing some rudimentary number crunching, it looks like we are going to save about four thousand dollars this year.
I'm actually thinking of riding my bike a couple times a week, except it gets so dang hot here..

Pedal power, baby! I don't do it everyday but I do ride my bicycle to the office (36 miles round trip) a few times a week. Now, to get some attention, I am making up small signs to wear on my back while I ride. "No money for gasoline", etc.
I haven't been cutting back on too many things, yet. As soon as gas starts putting a dent into my drinking money, then I'll make some decisions...lol See New York City by bicycle with me! |

Sacrificing? Heck, it's a blessing ... I finally have an excuse (that my family will accept) to stay home and not get dragged every darned place they think we have to go.

I don't drive, but I feel the crunch too. Smaller crowds at the bar and smaller tips too -all indicative of a teetering economy.
A larger % of my income goes to basic expenses and a smaller % goes towards my own pursuits. Simply looks like I'll be a wage slave for just that much longer...

I don't drive either. I have a bus pass (which is getting ready to go up from $45 to $55 a month) and walk a lot of places (not as practical as it used to be).
I used to ride my bike, but someone stole it out of my basement! Indirectly, I see that my food budget is buying less and less as costs rise to match transportation expenses. *sigh* not a lot I can do about that either.

But hey, its a write-off, and a pretty big one, too. Last year's $0.485 / mile deduction came out to a big number, keeping my taxes down. Tom, I know you guys have had it pretty bad for awhile. Just out of curiosity, how much of that is tax? |

Gas prices have me made go as far as bleaching signatures off my cards with acetone in order to reuse them. A 3pack of cards is the same as a gallon of gas and in my '88 Buick Century, every drop counts.
