Practice as long as it takes. practice untill you get it right. After that, work on making it better.
Then repeat... 6,500 hours for a three minute routine. but that's just me. |

I practice an effect until it feels right. I usually go back over moves and effects I've already mastered to keep it fresh in my mind also. This keeps me moving along, learning new things, but also maintaining my repertoire as well.

The amount of time I practice depends on my mood and whether I have a show or gig coming up. If I don't have a show I'll practice 30 minutes to an hour on sleights (both coin and card), then perhaps a few individual tricks or effects. When I have a show coming up it's based on what I've been practicing with a few more prop or self-working tricks. I'll work out the patter and practice the entire routine 2 to 3 times each night until the night of the presentation.
It must be smooth, natural and at a point to where I'm comfortable with the presentation. The amount of time one practices is depended on the learning curve, amount of time available, and goals. For example,is it a new skill or trick or is it practice to maintain a certain skill level? Sometimes you can practice all you want, but a particular sleight/effect will elude you until it just happens. Relax, everything comes in time and practice. If you are having difficulty with something, check your local Magic Dealer where you purchased the item from or Magician's club (it's more of a support group to me.) Both are helpful in learning to master new skills. |

Probably about an hour a day

I only practice when I'm supposed to be.

I practice when I feel like it. I practice every day, sometimes 20 minutes while watching a youtube video, sometimes 1 hour in front of a mirror (presentation), sometimes 2 hours while watching a movie (with a mirror next to me).

Never enough... with owning an online magic shop and running my magic blog and events calendar, I often get wrapped up in the business side of things, or end up window shopping for new items to carry...
That is my early New Years resolution - spend more time each day actually DOING magic.

I get impatient way too easily. I love performing; hate practicing. I want it to work NOW! Any tips for me?

I Practice whenever I'm doing something where my hands are normally still, for example, watching tv, travelling by train or bus, sitting and thinking and on the phone are just a few examples. It keeps my hands busy, gets them used to the moves and strengthens them for me,

I've been working on the Goshman Pinch and I try to do it whenever I'm doing something where my right hand is free...watching college lectures or TV. I'll even do it while stopped at red lights, etc. No set time for now...though when I get my cups & balls there will be set practice time!

I've actually been practicing a lot latley, and I always carry a deck with me. At work I practice what I can since I'm usually alone so it's not a big deal. Then I go home and either read up or pop in a DVD. When I need a break I just play a game or something. I am surprised at the quickness I am picking some of these things up.
I'm not trying to overwhelm myself though, I'm sticking to one or two "schools" at a time. I've been mainly focusing on cards with a couple of coin vanishes thrown in. Just taking it a little slow...
This is my sig until I can get photobucket to work right

I tend to rotate things, so they develop in stages. I find a little incubation time valuable in development. When I'm putting the pieces together, just keep working it til it's smooth, then repeat... as Justin stated. |

At home I practice close to 2 hours a day but it varies. During class I practice all the time with cards and coins.
I also practice everywhere I go with coins and cards |
