Hi Gary,
Yes, it is amazing that the thread has grown and grown. Along the way it has diversified a little from the original content and explored many little facets. This, of course, added bulk and continuity to thread. Bottom line, I guess there is more than enough information out there now so that people can make an informed decision--pro or con. Even the blatant exposures at the "Sandpit of Magic Forum" (where the kiddies play) have been helpful in allowing people to see exactly what is on offer. Cheers Ben

Hi K_B_G
I agree about Fearson's Floating Cig (and with the point you make). Enlightenment was/is an attempt to create a practical and amazing FLOATING CARD illusion, specifically using MAGNETS. 1/. Because it fascinated me. 2/. Because I thought I could create lift and descent in an interesting manner. This was a personal challenge I made to myself. If you PM a postal address, I'll send you a complimentary copy of the book that is supplied with the KIT so that you can read about the history and development. Cheers Ben

I just received the Enlightenment Development Kit ( DKIT ). It comes with the book "FURTHER ENLIGHTENMENT". The book is loaded with ideas using pens, business cards, old photographs ( some spooky stuff that is perfect for Halloween ). If you have Enlightenment and are using it, then you'll want this.
The kit also comes 2 X Micro Magnets, 2 X Internal Enlightenment Gimmicks and a Spacer to come up with new ideas ( or uses ones from the book ) using objects other than playing cards. The DKIT it is designed for those already familiar with Enlightenment ( you have one of the custom decks or the original effect and built your own ). Essentially, It's for those love the Enlightenment concept and want to further explore what it's capable of doing. Here's the ad in case I wasn't clear: Enlightenment Development Kit by Ben Harris 50+ additional ideas, effects, and applications with the amazing Enlightenment Concept You won't believe the ideas expounded in this 100 PAGE BOOK: "FURTHER ENLIGHTENMENT"—Tips on getting the best from the Floating Card Application, plus dozens of OTHER WAYS to put the principle to use. Lots of practical real world applications to build— using photos, boxes, business cards, note pads and more. Guest contributors include Marc Spelmann and Ken Krenzel. Along with the book you are supplied with 2 X Micro Magnets, 2 X Internal Enlightenment Gimmicks and a Spacer. Use these to assemble and explore many of the ideas detailed, and—to invent and make your own Enlightenment effects!

Today was my first exposure to this thread which was brought about by an ad in Genii. I am in no position to comment one way or the other. However, I will once again try to encourage a practice that I have suggested many, many times before.
All products will have to some degree a "pro" and a "con". No product can be 100% one way or the other. Someone somewhere can make a mountain out of a manhole. Therefore, I firmly believe that no review of any product should be made without stating to some degree a "pro" and some degree of a "con". Neither has to be significant but there should be two sides to every story. It would be very helpful to all of us. |

With the basic kit, you have to construct, from some playing cards, a housing unit for the gimmick. If you aren't good at that type of thing, there's a way around it by getting the custom installed deck, which is a work of art. Hope that helped.

Hey guys!
I've been reading most of your posts about the enlightening because I was thinking of purchasing it (please pay attention to the past tense ). It feels like it's a good trick but with a lot of ifs and buts. It looks like you have to order additional object(s) to go with it (adds to an already pretty pricey item), after your purchases you need to prepare the gimmick, it's questionable to me whether the spectator can hold the deck (if so, he shouldn't be nosy and besides it's quite risky anyways), and finally, I'm not sure how clean it is as it looks like the spectator CANNOT look between levitating card and deck and CANNOT pick the card in mid-air and examine it. Which actually explains why it's a one time trick... That's why I used the past tense! but...have you guys heard of eric james' floating card? The card looks like it lifts more than an inch and you can pass a card over and under it while in mid air (ie no strings attached ). Furthermore, the trick is much cheaper to buy (15-20 bucks or so). How do these tricks compare? Do you have any comments?? Thanks so much for the help. Constantine. |

Hi Constantine,
Our website (and the blog specifically), has all the answers you need. View the video demo to see how clean it looks and how the spectator CAN EXAMINE the card. Note: Enlightenment is a design with magnets, specifically to get away from the sort of thread work that is employed in the Eric James handling. No wobbling, no obvious hanging from threads. Nothing additional needs to be bought (so long as you have a PK magnet). Cheers Ben

Thank you so much Ben, but what is a PK magnet?? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but I'm a bit of a newbie
Is it easy to find and is it relatively cheap? And I'm a little confused as I read replys in which people said that it does not involve magnetic fields. hhmmm.... just confused. Also I'm surprised that you said that eric james' version involves strings, as a card is passed over and under the floating card. Thanks so much for your time and effort. Best, Constantine. |

Hi Constantine.
A PK Magnet is a strong but small magnet that is used to drive the "PK" style effects originated by Patrick Snowden. His classic was/is "PK Factor." Enlightenment uses a remote "PK" magnet to drive the lift mechanism creating the illusion of levitation. Many people will already have a suitable magnet, if they've ever purchased a "PK" effect over the last 30 years, or so. Passing a card above or below a floating object does not mean no threads are used. The evolution of the floating card effect over the decades is replete with thread methods that allow the passing of a hand above or below. Trust me, this has been my life for 30 plus years! Cheers Ben

Hi Ben.
I do trust you, and thank so much for the reply! So do I have to purchase a PK magnet separately for enlightenment, or is there something similar included in the package? Best regards, Constantine. |

Hi Constantine,
There is a wonderful thread hook up in Tarbell 7, I think. It lets you float card above your hand and the spectator can take it out of the air and examine it. Yes, if you don't have a PK magnet, you would need to purchase one. Your dealer can assist. We do have our own "Paradigm Shifter" which is rubber coated. But do ask your dealer for his opinion. Cheers Ben

Hi Ben,
Thanks again. Are you suggesting that as far as thread related floating cards go, Tarbell 7 is very good?? (ie. better than the real floating card??). Maybe I misunderstood you and Tarbell is not a trick after all...just a gimmick. Thanks. Constantine. |
