I wonder if Criss reads any of these posts.

It would be hilarious if he did. I saw his performance of the 10-card poker deal and made me want to cringe. The only thing I liked about it was Evelyn Ng

Reviews from people who have seen his Las Vegas show Believe are by far the angriest I have ever seen.
We got some discount tickets to the show when we were in Las Vegas last -- we figured "how bad could it be". After talking to a few locals, we sold our tickets at the door... thank god. http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/2008/9......at_Much_ I want to be supportive of Chris. Anybody who is able to make magic "cool" has my deep respect. I do feel sorry for him though. He may be very talented at TV magic and promotion, but it certainly seems that this type of show remains beyond his reach. |

I don't have enough experience to say that he's a technically poor magician, assuming skill is not a neccesary requirement for fame. I can comment on his use of uh, unconventional methods to accomplish his effects (stooges, camera tricks, ect). The reason why he ought to be reprimanded for engaging in these methods is not solely because those methods are inherently unethical but because he uses them so poorly and unconvincingly. Even slightly intelligent laymen are not fooled by his effects on TV, or are skeptical enough to not be impressed by things they can't explain. That's a real detriment I think.

I look at him and I don't see a magician. I see a rocker or something like that. But looking at him and having that sensation of wonder.. magic... etc it's not something that happens to me.

A very interesting conversation and great to read points of view that oppose my own but make me think and see the other side of the coin. I like some of the stuff he does on the TV specials but the obviously faked stuff makes me wince. Perhaps doubly so as I have been a TV editor for twenty years and some of what they have done is kinda amateur TV manipulation really.
I do have one thing that bugs me about the staged magic though. If we accept the use of stooges and general TV trickery are within the realm of what constitutes a magic act then you have to accept that Samantha from Bewitched was a magician. It's no different in many ways. It's scripted, the other people are actors, they spend a lot of time filming it and getting it right so that it looks real...... Here is a guy satirising David Blaine, his targets are obviously actors, the effects obviously well planned and staged for the camera. Does this make the guy some sort of magician? http://www.break.com/index/david_blaine_......rt2.html |

I don't like him, but I got to admit I watch everything he puts on TV. It's entertaining to me, even though I know it's all stooged and scripted. Unfortunately not a lot of lay people know this.

Is Criss a poor magician? Is he talented?
Watching him on TV will give the impression of a bad magician. But to see him on stage live is almost as inspiring as watching David Copperfield. Does Criss have talent, seeing him on stage tells me yes. His cirque Du Soliel show in Las Vegas proves it. If you have no respect for him, you must remember that he is a very self motivated individual who has gone a long way. Is he full of himself? At times I think so, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a hard worker at what ever he is working on at the time.

Regardless, my personal take on Criss is that he didn't get to where he is by being talentless. That said, the more you get into showbiz the more "experts" in "entertainment" get involved, which, in Criss' case, has led to more tricks based solely on camera effects than true end-to-end effects. This is my main issue with Criss as of late. I'm not sure if Banachek has come out and said exactly why they parted ways, but my guess would be that it had to do with pressure to do simple camera effects than true illusions. |

The bottom line is that no matter what we say, he is successfull and obviously he entertains lay people but he doesn't entertain magician, because to me...he is simply an actor, a very good actor.

Any publicity, is good publicity, and this thread has just generated a ton of it! If all the people here who are on this guy's case so bad, spent half the time working on their own act as they do worrying about whether or not Chriss Angel is any good, they might be able to have their OWN TV show!
