This is most certainly a long shot but just in case...
If one had access to a machinist willing to do work and no access to a model, would it be possible to obtain blueprints of a card trimmer & corner rounder? I imagine any standard design allowing for bellies and shorts would be fine. I would appreciate any pointers or thoughts on this. |

I'm working in an office where there is a mechanical department with machines used to cut all sort of metal (aluminium, steel...) to make small metal objects.
I've been thinking too for a while to get me made a card trimmer. For bellies or shorts I don't think it's hard to devise by yourself a "standard design" model. Thinking of a practical way to secure the card inside the trimmer plates is not difficult too. The problem comes to the precision you want to get and more important, what precision the machine is able to attain. For me, making shorts is ok as the machines are able to cut straight lines with a precision less than 1/10th of a millimeter. The only problem I have is with curbs. You need a machine with a numerical control to attain such a good precision (tenths of millimeter). |

.....or you could just buy a Line-Lo for $100.00 and spend the difference on beer

I don't know the precision you get with a Line-Lo. Don't think you can attain a range in the 1/10th of millimeter with it.
If I have the opportunity to have a trimmer done exactly how I want, and without any costs, I'll save the 100$ for the beer and I'll maybe have enough left for a lap dance by a real stripper. |

Excellent, you seem to have all well in hand.
And you've already got the $200.00 put aside to tool-harden the plates?.....because if you don't harden the plates you'll.......WAIT, what am I telling you this for, you already know how to make your own machine. |

I've already devoured Dallas' so-called best tonk player. I left him shaking his head as he told my partner that "you should take this guy on the road;" little did he know that I was on the road. For the record Texas has some of the best hustlers that I've seen (especially under the bridge/highway). Respectfully, Doc P.S. I'm sorry to say that I recently heard that the best dice maker in the country, Junior Hinson of Detroit has died. I'm not sure if this is true or not but if so it should be noted that a legend has died. |

Glad to hear you're out and about Doc, I was wondering where you were.
I've heard of Junior from a guy who was showing me his Graham dice edger. He also said that Junior was the best of the best. With the demise of guys like Gambling Sam and Junior (not confirmed yet), I always wonder who's collecting their stories? I hear Dr. X is also quite unwell.....another "maker" I'd like to think somebody is recording a history of so these guys so when they go they're not gone for good. I suspect that nobody is collecting their stories unfortunately. |

Probably they wouldn't want their stories told except in the right company anyway, and those stories will make the rounds by word of mouth. Besides a lot of these folks are secretive by nature...
Anyway I guess I will have to work on my drafting skills. If I had a model to work from this would be easier. I know what the thing does but I'll be *** if I can figure out all of it from a few pictures, and that's the very basic thing, nothing like a Porper. Just for kicks at any rate seeing that I can get what I need done with office supplies... |

Probably they wouldn't want their stories told.... Have you read "The Big Con" by David Maurer? During the late 30's and early 40's, HUNDREDS of ropers, insidemen, fixers, etc spilled everything they knew to Maurer, tipped it all in order to preserve for history and posterity elements of the big con that were permanently fading away. It's the cornerstone text of what we've got today on the big store.......thank god somebody asked the question "who's writing this down"? |

Expert that would be fine but just don't get the two Junior's mixed up, there is a black Junior that also makes dice as well that lives in Deleware.
For the record, Junior Hinson was the best of the best gaffed dice makers in the country. I had the pleasure of talking to him on the phone a couple of times but never actually met him. If that which I heard is true, may this Gaffed Dice Maker Legend Rest In Peace. Respectfully, Doc |

Buy one, then do like Jim Riser, reverse engineer it, make 10 of them, keep one and sell the rest. More than likely the vintage one will bring as much or more as you paid for it, even on ebay. The ones that are not marked will be the least expensive, next would be the one made in the Midwest and East, like ones made by H.C. Evens. I’ve seen the unmarked ones sell for as little as $1200.00 and the ones made on the west coast by Will & Finck or M. Price have sold for over $7000.00.
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.
