Easter's coming up next month and I'm sure some of us will be invited to perform for parties or dinners. Ever thought of what will you be showing to the families in your show?

The obvious: an egg bag.

Seems to me that Stephen Minch recently published a book of egg magic. Can't remember who wrote it. Something like, The Encyclopedia of Egg Magic. That has Easter written all over it. Also, ask in the Bizarre forum. Those guys are great sources of ideas and inspiration in cases like this. Although you might want to avoid the sacrificial chicken at a family show.

Producing continuous easter eggs filled with candy out of an empty easter basket comes to mind.

Hi Kathryn,
How about... Spectator , a young boy or girl, picks an easter egg from a choice of five and puts it to one side. The remaining eggs are broken open one by one to reveal nothing inside. Their egg is then broken open to reveal it is the only one with something inside ... ... The last golden tickeet to Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory!!! Mmmmmmmmm.... Howard |

Well all these are great ideas! Are there any tricks that are more towards family instead of kids? As in, the adults will enjoy it as much as the kids. Something impressive. I'm thinking of doing card manipulations and multiplying balls but I want something more inclined towards easter too. Any suggestions?

The very first trick in the first volume of Tommy Wonder's Books of Wonder. A miniature match to a chosen card appears in an easter egg that appears on a table.

Family oriented? Hmmm. You could host a picnic and then make the food "appear" on the plates. The food could have an easter theme.

Or Harry Potter themed. Food appears on plates at Hogwarta. A few months back in the Linking Ring, a Reverend Someone (sorry, forgot the name) has some religious effects that might work too. Sorry, don't remember the issue.
-Hippity hop easter bunnies, Make easter candy in a dove pan; "it takes some sugar, chocolate etc..." take off the lid to show candy. -Or make a easter bunny in the dove pan. Blend silks in a change bag to make one with the easter bunny on it. -Turn real eggs (I suggest blown) in easter eggs. The sky's the limit, really. Take some of the effects you do and put an easter twist on them. Just my 2 cents worth, WR WR = WhiteRabbit hmmm rabbit is another name for Bunny...

This was funny last Easter, at least to me: I took a white fake egg and easter-striped it, but only in black ink. Used it in the egg bag routine, with the line: "..and it's an Easter Egg...When I was a kid we didn't have color."
Also, does anyone do the Devant "boy, girl, and eggs" routine? That would be messy, but worth it.

Imagine this:
A card is selected and signed. The deck is shuffled (by a spectator) and when the cards are spread on the table the selection is seen to have vanished. A chocolate easter egg which has been on the table the whole time is cracked open and a folded, paperclipped card is found inside. The paperclip is removed and the card unfolded. It is the signed selection. Those familiar with Sankey's effect "paperclipped" should have no trouble figuring out a method for this. If I can help, PM me.

You could turn sponge balls into those little yellow easter chiclets sold in stores.

I have about three dozen hinged plastic eggs in various bright colours that nest in a small stack when all the hinges are open. You can fit the stack into a pretty small space, and as you take each egg off the top you can fold it closed before it comes into view. I've pulled twelve out of a front pocket before which looks completely impossible. The whole bunch will fit into my change bag easily. I found them in a dollar store somewhere and snatched them up for my now ridiculously stuffed props chest.

In my Showtime column in the Linking Ring magazine of April, 1999, I did a routine called the Easter Egg Bag, which was an Easter version of Roy Benson's egg-bag routine that appears in Bruce Elliott's now out of print book, Classic Secrets of Magic.
This routine ends with the multiple production of eggs from the bag -- in this case colored easter eggs. And, BTW, Curtis, that line "when I was a boy we didn't have color" is absolutely hilarious! May I have your permission to use it? |

If you're performing close up or walk around you could do Sponge Bunnies. I use the sculpted ones and put them in a Peeps box.
Maybe someday, someone will manufactuer a set of bunnies that actually look like Peeps.

How about doing a color changing egg followed by a silk to egg. Ammar has a funny bit where after you prove the egg is real, you pull the silk out of your forehead.
I would also do sponge bunnies, because I love the bunnies! |

Why not do some sort of rope trick using the old "the bunny goes through the hoop, around the tree and yada yada yada." You get it.
Could be just what they wanna see. |

Do Silk to Egg except that the real egg is colored. (Golden Egg!)
