So today I went to O.K socialites, pretty much like a party enviorment. I brought my sponge balls, scotch and soda, and my hot rod.
I did all the tricks for about 6 people. First I showed my sponge magic to the guy where you had to sign in at the entrance. He said it was the most amazing thing he had seen, and that I could be the next david Copperfield. I was flattered, and thanked him. I asked him if he figured it out, and he said nope. I did mark wilsons rountine by the way. I then did the hot rod for a lady there. I asked her if she wanted to see my hot rod. I said , "Ok here we have a rod with different colored gems on both sides.", and did the hot rod trick. As I made the rod change to her color she picked, she said "Oh wow", and then when I made one side to her gem, and one side to different colored gems about to hand it off for her to inspect it, she said, "Oh, that's not a trick. It just has different colored gems on both sides." So I moved on to one more person, the last person. He seemed to be burning my hands with I did my hot rod and sponge balls, he liked the hot rod alot. Totally baffled him. And then I goofed up on one of the sleights as I put the sponge ball in his hand. He said he saw me palm it, and I need to "practice more". I was so upset. So that was my experience at a party I went to today..whats your thoughts on what to do when you goof up? I know there's a saying, an amateur practices until he can do a trick succesfully; a professional practices until he cannot fail. I think that statement says a lot in this situation. |

Interesting that you brought this up. I just got back from a dinner at a local magic restaurant, After the opener, a very big name in magic came on stage (you would all know him), and in his first trick I spotted something under his jacket.... that should nor have been there. I even saw a woman from the audience point it out to her boyfriend, who quickly quieted her.
I was left wondering, should I have told him after the show? It would have been quite odd, me- a total nobody telling this "name" that a mistake was made? what should I have done? fish- it seems that this annoyed you, but do you think it helped? regards, kevin

To prefer to be busted then for people to silently notice a mistake. If the error is pointed out once, it won't happen again.

Thinking about the sponge ball reaction.
It's a fairly natural (if impolite) response. I remember listening to an interview with soprano Beverly Sills a number of years back. She commented that people what are somewhat knowledgeable about music will congratulate you on your show, then comment about a minor error somewhere in the performance. They probably think that they are showing their sophistication, and are enjoying an "in-moment" with you. It shouldn't hurt your feelings, but it does. OTOH if Beverly Sills got it, then you shouldn't feel too bad about it. John

So, should I try and contact the guy. it was obvious. we were 3 tables up on his left and I could see it from my seat (hanging from his right shoulder).

Some people seem to have this idea that the "names" in magic are sacrosanct, and must not be besmirched (I love that word, BTW) unless that name is Chris Angle or David Blaine -then it's OK to harp all over them...
