I got booked by a realestate developer to open a new mall for them. They said it could be an on going gig with all their new malls. But the guy wants me to carry insurance and he's waiting for me to fax him confirmation.

Anyone have any suggestions on inexpensive performing insurance? I do not belong to any magic organizations. (I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member.) Thanks. Oh, the gig is 40 minutes for $400 so I hope I don't have to spend my whole salary.

Jim,

I'm a licensed insurance agent. (Have worked part time in insurance for about 15 years. It's my closest friend's office so I'm able to come and go as I please to do shows.) Anyway, you won't get a better deal on liability insurance than the group policies offered by I.B.M., SAM or Clowns of America International.

Unfortunately, by the time you join one of the organizations and pay your premium, a good chunk of your salary will be used. I have had insurance through all three organizations at different times. I have been with the I.B.M.'s plan for quite a few years now. Their plan varies in cost by your average gross income: http://www.magician.org/en/node/324

If you're making more than $75,000 a year, you won't make any money off this one show but it's always good to have professional liability insurance. Most malls won't allow you to perform there without it and I have several venues that require a certificate of insurance from me.

Let me know if you have any questions.

You don't need to belong to any organization. The $2,000,000 aggregate policy runs $200 per year. NO CHARGE for adding the malls or other clients as "Additional Insured" AND They'll deliver the certificate within 48 hours or less. They've always got mine to the client by the next day! Very friendly and reliable service. I've been with them for years with ZERO complaints of any kind. Highest recommendation! Check them out!

I shudder when I see the "inexpensive" word and insurance in the same sentence.

The right coverage is what you should be seeking.

Skip,

I wasn't familiar with them. It looks pretty good. Indiana Insurance Company (the carrier) is a well-established company.

If you're not a member of an organization, that's probably the way to go.

Performers of the US are great. I've been with them for 3 or 4 years. Highly recommended.
