I just purchased the Morris Color Changing Knives two knife set, which I’m quite happy with. I’ve been told that Morris no longer manufactures a matching B/B knife, which was mentioned in the instructions that came with the two knife set. Does anyone know where I might find a black knife that matches this set? I’d like to have a black knife that can be examined as well as the white. I seem to remember this style of penknife being common years ago. Of course, I did the usual searches with no luck. Anyone know where I might find a matching black knife? Thanks very much. Here a link to Morris set.

These were manufactured by Drane. If you purchase a second set, you can paint the extra gaffed knife to the specs you need. I did this once with a black magic marker, but a good spray paint would be even better.

Dave,
Looking at my set, it appears that the black knife is just a white knife sprayed black.
Thanks,

Those are the ole standards originally called "Enardoe" and as Bill mentioned made (or imported) by Ed Drane. Get some spray glossy black Epoxy paint and you're all set. Spray the gaff set to match. Mask off what you don't want painted and use multi very fine coats never spray on too much at once.

Actually the best set of cc knives I have were made for me by going into a cutlelry shop that did repairs. I picked out the knives and had them switch handles. That way I got the textured ones on one side so you can feel the difference.

That's a great idea Pete. I do have doubts about my skill with spray painting such a small object. Now the question is whether or not I can find a cutlelry shop in my area. Hope springs eternal.

My favorite set of knives was made by Lanny Kibbey. They have jigged bone scales on one set and white mother of pearl on the other. The textural difference is a great reference point.

Those are not really expensive knives. The Kibbey knives cost three times as much. Nothing against Joe. He makes nice knives, but the Kibbey knives are the best.

Yes, Joe Mogar's Stag Surprise set is definitely on my wish list. I’ve started with the Morris set because I wanted to start practicing a basic routine first to see if I were proficient enough with CC knifes to justify spending money on a more expensive set.

Bill,

The Kibbey knives sound wonderful, but definitely out of my price range. I still appreciate the information. Thanks again.

The down side is that you have to find Lanny Kibbey.

Then you wait.

I have used the Enardoe knives (E O Drane backwards)like the ones shown above for years, guess I'm set in my ways. I love the way they turn over. They are great for Pete's rollover move described on p.212 of Tarbell 7.

I contacted Lanny a couple of years ago and didn't end up buying a set at the time. I still need to. Here's the email I used:

magicoflanny@yahoo.com

Here's the information he sent me at the time. This was from December 2006 so I don't know if the pricing is accurate but it should be good for a general idea of his pricing.

"The knives are made of natural materials like stag, chipped bone, ivory, turquise, pearl etc. I use winchester knives and every one has been really pleased. The price of a 3 kinife set of one color change and two hand outs is $150 pearl is $200"
