It seems to me that there really should be a Question Mark added to the title of this section of the Café.
It wasn't always thus. Neal

The title of this section of the Café is "Now that's funny!"
I'm suggesting that, with regard to many a post that has been made over the past months, a better title would be, "Now that's funny?" It's simply an observation that the threads and posts on this section used to be concerned with comedy via content or subject matter. For the last few months they seem to be neither of these things and I think the forum is a less interesting place to visit and even contribute to because of this. Neal.

Then don't visit this section, Neal.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

Ok... I'll bite.
What happened to you recently, that's funny? I'll start.. I was at a show and a lady (creepy lady) said "I hear that you're funny... You better be funny because I'm probably funnier then you!' she was sitting in the front row... My response... "I thought I told you to wait in the car". She became perturbed because I stole her thunder so I proceeded to hold the microphone for her to speak and yanked it away every time she started. She didn't catch on for a long time.... but the audience did, They apparently knew her quite well and were on my side from the beginning. Some of them had huge smiles on their faces. That's funny, right? She tried to upstage me a few more times then I invited the rest of the audience to give her the best story they could, after the show, because there was a prize of $150 dollars and she is writing a book of funny quotes. I turned to get a prop and when I turned back she was gone. Now I ask you... that was funny. You don't bring a knife to a gun fight, right. Anyone else with a funny story? Or another observation is that funny means different things to different people and I agree that some of the posts have reached the lowest common denominator but I too am guilty as I post a few bad jokes and puns as well. I find it fun to poke and prod the intellect of my fellow posters because, all in all, magicians are some of the most creative people out there and if I had my choice I'd rather live in a colony of magicians then bankers or mechanics.

Actually, I thought that was very well done.
If the question of whether or not there should be a question mark at the end of this category title comes up, please let me address that. Four, and only four of the threads in this group are of a game origin. If you find those to be disruptive to your standard, perhaps you should mention this to Steve. I have no problem with a "green room" category of funny games on this board. In fact, if it happens...I'll initiate more of these game threads. I appreciate your imput. |

I find that although some of the posts in the "game threads" may not be what all would consider funny, there are some real gems intersperced within, you just have to read and mine them out. I have used some of these things to seed and develope into some decent bits of business to be used at the right times.
Besides that, whats wrong with having some fun with each other so long as it stays lighthearted? Consider it a giant brainstorming session. Not everything can be gold, and not everyones taste is the same either. Why can some take a $500.00 effect and it is presented poorly, but some can take a $.50 squeaker and entertain and delight both children and adults with it. Don't be so quick to dismiss things, You should NEVER stop learning, nor consider yourself....Let's say "above" that sort of thing, you just might miss some real moments for you and/or your audience. |

Right on the money ERIC. I'm still getting a kick out of the thread where we're arguing about nothing.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=32&64 Granted it's in the "Not Very Magical" section, but it's still funny.

I have no problem with the game threads or any threads. If people enjoy them that's fine. But this section used to throw up all sorts of interesting topics. That doesn't seem to happen so much anymore. Seems to me that most posters here no longer think past the game threads. that's fine by me too. I'm just making a point that this section of the Café has become the poorer for it. And as a by product less amusing to visit too.

Neal... you've got three posts in this thread, no funnies. Bring more funnies. Don't make me ask twice or it's the spanking machine for you.

Erlandish; Check out my 1st thread again. Comedy isn't always laugh out loud funny 'set up and punchline, sometimes it comes in the form of pithy comment, sarcasm and irony.
While our American friends at large often have difficulty with these aspects of comedy I'm surprised a Canadian missed it. Neal

I was going to PM this to Dustin but after writing it thought I'd post it here.

Then don't visit this section, Neal Dustin; That's the very point I'm making. I don't bother visiting here very often anymore because there's little in the way of what I consider interesting discussion to read and participate in. I'm not out to try and stop contributors posting whatever they like in whatever threads they like. Indeed I made a post or two to the 'game threads' when they 1st started. I'm merely pointing out that from my point of view what used to be an interesting, informative and oftentimes entertaining section of the Café to visit appears to be much less so now. And that the loss of depth in this section of the Café seems to me to have a direct relationship to the number of posts made on these 'game threads'. I'm not suggesting these threads be removed or that people stop posting on them if they enjoy them I'm just hoping to try and stimulate this section of the Café back to the more interesting site I used to find it. And for the benefit of Erlandish; How do you make a dead dog float? Add a blob of ice cream. Neal

Well I've made my effort by trying to inject a broader range of topics into the mix.
But I'm happy with the idea of market forces so if it's game threads you want .. "post away Meryl, post away" Neal

So why discuss being funny? Just do it.
Shouldn't this debate be posted under the "Not very magical" section? Please respond in a funny way? Thank you?

Jay to answer your questions, (and respond to your one statement)
Because it can be interesting illuminating and informative and forums such as this are designed for doing just that. I have been for over 25 years. No I fear it would be lost on you. Yes, I think you should. Neal

This thread is absurd
Instead of being philosophical about being funny, why not be funny?

Jay- "Thank you?"
Me- "yes I think you should" Jay- "why not be funny?" Me (previously)- "I fear it would be lost on you." (see above) Your question in your last post reminded me of a line from a Britsh female comedian, Jo Brand. "My agent got me some bookings over in the States and told me I had to make my act more American... so I put on an extra 120 pounds and lost all sense of irony." (That's my 2nd gentle pop at our American cousins in one thread! Sorry guys you know I love you really.) This gag came to mind from your, "why not be funny" comment. As I've earnt my living for 25 years soley from performing a comedy magic show your comment was accidently ironically funny to me. Neal
