I sent james a printout of the two threads on him as well as a small note and check to help with medical bills today. I think the thread printouts with everyone's well-wishing will really life his spirits.

Could we send American Express travelers checks made payable to James Tong? They're insured and he shouldn't have a problem cashing them at a large bank any where in the world right? I could be all wet. Does anyone know about these things?

God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

There is a different problem in the States. In the US, the cost of sending an electronic payment overseas is rather high, compared to other countries. An electronic transfer to Germany, for example costs about $40 to $60.00. And if the exact transfer details are not provided and the transfer fails, the bank may charge a fee for attempting a transfer.

However, there is another option that will work. Travelex (formerly Thomas Cook) has bank accounts in almost every country in the world. They can write a bank check in local currency on a local bank and this can be sent to the person handling James' account. It is much less expensive for all concerned. There would be no fee to James for the transaction, since the bank would be a local one and the payment would be in local currency. The fee for these checks is quite modest. The last one I sent went to London and was only a few dollars.

Bill, thanks for the heads up on this, I did a google and made a phone call and they have an office in Norfolk, just a few miles from our plater Smile There fees are very very modest.

I'll get some items together to help as well.

I used to use American Express Travelers Checks until I learned that there are a number of places that just won't take them. Also, in order to use them, you need to sign them in one place when you get them, then sign them at the other line when you "cash" them. Once the second signature goes on, ANYONE can cash them.

I haven't been around much lately, and just heard about James. He is in our thoughts and prayers.

Also, why not have Steve send out a PM to everyone letting them know what's going on? I like James a lot, he has helped me (probably without knowing) so much, and I was a little shocked to find out about what he is going through.

I wish I were able to send him a check/money order right now, but it'll have to wait until next week. =/ Let me know who to send to.
