I have learned amazing amounts of knowledge by doing nothing more than being humble, and acknowledging the expertise of others. Often, in this sort of situation, people are willing to tell you huge amounts of information. You have the opportunity to learn things that no school or book or DVD can teach you. As well, you have access to someone who can give you an incredibly valuable critique.

Like others have said, learn 1 or 2 tricks and learn them WELL. Most people get caught up in trying too many tricks and never focusing and really getting good at just a few.
