I wanted to open the doors to anyone that might have a good idea of a good Mascot for CupsCon.

What do you think...a bird...furry animal...a big cup...Whats your idea?

I spent 3 years as a professional sports mascot for minor league baseball, soccer, hockey and filling in for corporate characters. I was trained by Dave Raymond, the original Philly Phanatic.

Even though you won't have an actor in a suit I have one idea for you. DON'T pick something like a cup or a ball. It drives me crazy when I see either a character, or someone in a suit as an inanimate object. I've seen companies hire someone to design a logo and costume for a phone, piece of pizza or whatever. (How do you act like a piece of pizza? Stand on the corner and yell bite me, eat me!) In the world of sports, one great route is to have a "muppet" type of character. This is something that sort of defies definition. It's a thing. Think Philly Phanatic, or Bernie from the Miami Heat.

One thing that might be neat is a cartoonish character performing the cups and balls. A human though. Maybe an old-timey english busker? You can incorporate him into a logo that could be printed on merchandise and the site.

Ironically, the word mascot comes from the Occitan word masco and the Portuguese mascoto which means witchcraft/spell.

Wow, if THAT doesn't deserve an award for the most obscure reference, I don't know what does.

Just my idea.

I would like to see a seal with a sinle cup between his wings(or fins) and a final load on his nose.

Maybe a teacup poodle with a crochet ball nose and tail pom? Cartoon images of such a critter in and under a magician's cup sniffing around etc seems about right.

I would not have a mascot. I would have a logo.

There are several pieces of logo design software that you could use.

I prefer the idea of a logo. Maybe something along the lines of the old drawings in Hocus Hocus Jnr or the illustrations in Ozanam.

Gibeciere (the journal) has a nice logo - an engraving from the earliest published magic book in Spanish 'Enganos a Ojos Vistas' by Pablo Minguet y Yrol.

An image from one of the old books would be appropriate for a c&b convention.

Why not both?

I guess it is time for to explain a little.

CupsCon has a logo it is a simple Font type logo. What I was looking for was to see if a Mascot was needed as well.

I am really trying my best to make CupsCon a different type of convention. I am trying to give each of you a part of it. As a was of making it a convention you had some say on how it was part together. To make it your convention as much as my dream.

So, I am sorry for the confusion that came with this post. It seems to be a subjuct we could of skipped.

Wish you the best this holiday weekend.

That way we could also bestow on people or products our "Seal of Approval"

Not wanting to sound negative, I thought I'd better put my money where my mouth is. I had a play around in Photoshop this afternoon and came up with these:

Idea #1: Using the cups from Hocus Pocus Junior

Idea #2: inverted version of the above

Idea #3: Using an image from the Minguet book 'Enganos a Ojos Vistas'

I like that third one. I did a thing with the frontispiece of Hocus Pocus, Jr., but I don't like the way it came out.

No. 3 is the best. Here is my suggestion.

After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Ok that did not work very well, I had to make it so small you can hardly see it.

I belive it is fun to have a mascot and a mascot's name besides the logo, you may want to use the logo and slogan as well.

how about an octopus?

Typically, a mascot is a living creature that is on hand at functions. None of the other conventions has a mascot.

if you want to be orthodox it is o.k.

I can live without a mascot.

Let me put this another way. If we have a mascot, that is, a live creature that is to represent CupsCon, then we will also have to prepare for attacks from people such as the ASPCA, PETA, and all the other groups that object to the exploitation of live animals. Is it worth the hassle?
