Just watched DB's latest 30 minutes. First of all I'm a huge fan. However, every now and again it just doesn't happen huh?
This show was simply not a very good idea. I watched with lay friends. It was kind of embarrassing. I'm not even too sure what the point was, if there even was a point. To be candid there was a bit of a faux pas made. I mean here we have someone who has traveled across both the UK and The States categorically slating Spiritualism and mediumship, yet was suggesting that, through training, he could get a young woman to "access the mediumistic state" (I'm not joking, he actually said that, and remember, this is something he has already argued doesn't exist) simply by thinking about it and then by touching a series of knots in a handkerchief (old magic trick found in approx fifty magic magazines) they would automatically fall apart. You guessed it, she did, and Derren laughed in amazement and told her she'd done really well. Then she got kidnapped, tied up with inescapable police wrist ties, put in a sack and thrown into a pond where she somehow (nobody knows how, including the girl) escaped. At the end the girl stated, "It was all quite interesting, I'm not quite sure how it happened." I think she must have meant the commissioning of the programme. My guess would have to be blackmail. Of all and any magic/mentalist/escapologist shows I've ever seen this was beyond a shadow of doubt the absolute worst. Although somehow I just know that someone, very soon, will enter this room and tell you a different story. And I'm looking forward to it, because I simply have no idea what kind of argument they'll put up for their case. I'm even excited, longing to hear it! bobser

It pains me to admit it - but yes, it wasn't very good.
No drama, no twist, just someone unknowingly (?) being prepared for abduction and escape, then the "abduction" (laughable - she was so compliant) and escape, which was all too quick and a bit of a ho-hum moment. Not even a good script this week: no wit, no puns, no sexual innuendos And like last week, another simpering, personality-free applicant: surely the production team could've found better? A complete misfire. I'll still be watching next week, however ! |

Bobser he wasn't insinuating mediumship was real, merely using it as a metaphor/example.
But yes it was all a bit odd this week. |

I mean he told her to put her hand over a hankie which had been knotted 3 or 4 times. Prior to that remember he had shown photographs and told a story of how Spiritualists (actually NOT Spiritualists but rather fake mediums, an unforgivable error) were able to put themselves into this state. So, for me, an absolute !@#umption that this state was demonstrable. Anyway, lets be honest, there simply couldn't have been a viewer, seriously, not one, who would have looked upon that as anything other than a very bad and cheap magic trick from the days of the victorian parlour. Which of course, and lets be honest, is exactly what it was. Everyone's uncle and their dog were doing it in the 50's and 60's (yeah I know that's not Victorian!). bobser

By the way I just love the way the first 3 letters of the beginning of a word in my last post were blotted out. The A and the S and then the other S. fantastic. You gotta' love American English!

An interesting demonstration of the Slydini silks, but not much more I'm afraid.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

The first and only thing to remember is that it was made for the lay audience, the general public not us, but yes it certainly did lack something and was very dissapointing.

I agree with bobster: I have found this last episode incoherent with Derren's persona.
What would a real mindreader do?

Just for arguments sake I might say that only mentalists (whilst cringing & biting their nails) would watch this. A lay audience might simply switch off.

Personally speaking, I felt it was slightly underwhelming for the final push - I'd of prefered a couple of more cameras...
however, I felt that the entire show's patter was interesting/useful as a complete convincer for the person involved - she needed the self-belief to reinforce everything else - the breathing, the reacting to danger/change... so giving her a belief structure to work with was needed - he mentioned the breathing techniques used by houdini for example... I would argue though that if people were switching off in their droves then he wouldnt sell out his gigs, nor would he still retain a very popular tv slot... if you use the mighty boosh tv show in the uk, that was always tucked away on bbc3 at ridiculous times, even though it was massively popular with students..

I agree that the show last night was "weak"( havent really got all that excited aboutthe last two series), but the lessons we recieve in "re-dressing "effects is priceless. From a simple metal puzzle to Slydini Silks ,very cleverly thought out.

I just wonder whats going on with Derren at the moment.
It almost feels as though this show and even the David Tennant one are skating on the edge of saying " Its all just magic tricks ". Wonder if he is having second thoughts about the number of people who seem to buy into his NLP and Mind Control patter. |

"Wonder if he is having second thoughts about the number of people who seem to buy into his NLP and Mind Control patter. "
I wouldn't say so. I would say he is struggling to keep his tv shows fresh and come up with new ideas. His psuedo NLP and original (genuine mind reading)stuff has worn thin. I think also he has buckled to the pressure of his critics a few years back who were condeming him for using the NLP and geniune angle. Pretty shortly afterwards he started puting disclaimers in everything he does. Everything has a shelf life. |

So in this case instead of just doing Slydini Silks it becomes a test of the spectators Mediumistic inside out skills !!! |
