I've done a search but nothing turned up. What is your opinions of his DVD. Cheers.

Sol turns up on Saturdays at Café Rustico II in NYC about 12.
Unless you have long term access to the man, the DVD is about as close as you can get to his material and approach.

There is some good stuff in there - a great way to use The World's Fastest Knot, for example, or a locking coin set, but overall I was disappointed. Most of the material lasts less than a minute in performance - more like magical interludes than routines - but as I say, it is solid stuff but short. Hope that helps. And I'm sure there will be those who are more upbeat. We all have our preferences, I guess. Regards Peter |

Richard Kaufman's CoinMagic book has a whole section on Sol Stone. Mostly moves and sleights but there are a couple routines.

Some of Sol's materials are also found in some issues of Apocalypse and Tarbel Course #7. I think his specialty is up standing coins quickies.
Basically I like his effect, but I always have a doubt of his "One Hand Spellbound Move". Does it work in real world? His adaptation of it to "One Hand Triple Spellbound" is fascinating idea, but I have a question of its effectiveness. T.Takenaka

The lack of longer, more elaborate routines on Mr. Stone's DVD is largely intentional. After many years of thought and experimentation, Mr. Stone has concluded that the repetitive structure that is popular in coin routines today (i.e. where three or four coins all do the same thing, perhaps in different ways) does nothing to enhance the effectiveness or the deceptiveness of a coin effect.
In this belief, he is in good company. Several authors have recognized that miracles tend to happen only once, and repetition of most effects, no matter how remarkable, serves only to dilute their impact. Despite Mr. Stone's obvious years of experience, this is not some quaint, old notion that ought to be recorded and then dismissed. Think about it: how many multi-phase routines did David Blaine do on his first two TV specials? Mr. Stone may call it "Quick and Casual Close up", but quick, simple, one-shot effects like this sell like the proverbial hotcakes if you change the title to "Street Magic".

Some of Sol Stone's little routines are from a different era, which is not a bad thing at all. Some material is so old that it is "new again" (like the rope moves in Dean's Box). I especially like Stone's "Purple Cow" routine, which is the sort of aquitment that has been out of fashion lately because of "the myth of naturalness". Try it on some spectators and you will find that they are very impressed with the "hand washing".

If Mr. Kam hadn't said it I would not of dared, we milk our routines to death.
Multi phase copper/silver which the layperson can't follow, and don't care anyway. Copper/silver/brass, hoppin halfs, Muti spellbound, those four coin routines which work as well with three.( or two ) It's not just coins, ring and string, etc. Just because they worked 50 years ago doesn`t mean they work now. |

Eddie, it helps to clarify the difference between doing a routine with several coins and REPEATING THE EFFECT with several coins.
Most of the time an audience just wants to see magic and be entertained. I agree that doing an 'across' routine with a pocketfull of change where the coins travel one at a time would be very difficult to script and present. Making just one coin jump from hand to hand, or penetrate the table a few times can be more interesting to most audiences. Unless you REALLY want to get confrontational and make a challenge type situation. Not always the best strategy. And the next ant skittered into the chamber, made its way to the grain sack, selected a grain and holding it gently in its madibles scurreyed out of the room by a route shared by all previous ants though somehow known only to ants. Remember that story? Jonathan

I'm very sorry to bump up this thread considering this was 16 years ago...
but Mr. Stone's observation especially held true in this era... taking Ben Earl's Real Coin magic for example one coin simply fly from one hand to another, with no more than 3 or 4 coins, and with well intention and structure procedure more profound effect and better reaction than 4 coins across. I understand it does depends on the performing environment but I've found Mr.Stone's statement true and work well with me after years of studying coin. |

I do shows. But If I am not doing a show, I have to do quickies. Most people do not have 5 minutes for a routine. But almost everyone has 15-30 seconds to see a true miracle. He knows what he is doing and this is what you use most of the time as you meet people out in the real world.

Totally agree Maven, and have to agree with a lot of the old posts as to Sol Stones’s intentions as to shorter performance. It has long been part of my approach as to magic...I simply call it, ”Less is more.” 😁
After traveling through all the longer more mechanical stuff, you can be dulled by all the repetition, and so can the specs. And funny, amongst the first things I thought to shorten was a Coins Across effect, from 4 to just 3 coins. I still do it that way to this day in my “KrazyKoinZ.” Mixing the old with some new applications, I was able present something a bit more streamlined and practical for all the busyness we encounter in our day. 😊 And you’re right Maven, people don’t usually have “5 minutes” for magic but 30 well-placed seconds or so and they’ll more happily let you make their day. 😁 Of course, the longer routines have their place, but as I like to move around in & out of people’s spaces, the more immediate, quick presentations work best. Always like to be ready with a few of these wherever I go. 😊 Oh, and I remember seeing Sol Stone sometimes downtown in the City in my magic travels, a very clever & gifted closeup man.
