Certainly any business needs to turn a profit to survive. But does the Magic Castle cater too far to the corporate crowd?
Isn't magic supposed to be something the poor and middle class are supposed to enjoy as well? Whatever happened to the common touch? DaiBato |

Doesn't that question belong in the answer a question with a question thread?

Like it or not The Magic Castle is a brand, a business and an institution. As for your question, no, the Castle is under no obligation to cater to any one class or group of people. They came close to closing their doors in the past. Chances are they weren't selling enough to meet costs ... rent isn't cheap!
If you want to fill a niche open a magic café or soup kitchen that bans corporate groups.

I have been thinking a lot about the castle lately, since I just became a memeber a month ago.
A basic member ship clocks in a $500/year. The !@#ociate (non-magical memberships) are a bit more, but lets go with $500 to make the math easier. The castle boasts 5000 members. That means an income of $2,500,000/year I have no clue what the overhead on the place is. They separated out the dining room a while back and now that is run by a different group who probably pay a small rent to the castle. Anyway, if you have been there, start to think of the cost to run such a place. I submit that two and a half million sounds like a lot, but it is not really. I think that to keep their doors open, they need to bring in more, and hence the corporate atmosphere you speak of. I am familiar with the issues going on around the potential sale. I was told that they are good to keep going at least a couple of more years. If the place ever does close, at least I can say I was a member. I do consider that to be somewhat of an honor.

A season pass for a professional football, baseball, basketball, or hockey team is out of my budget too. This is old news.
