The stunt was very popular with Jim Rose Circus, and I have seen it presented in Las Vegas as part of variety acts. I would be slightly concerned that people might think that it is nothing more than a party trick ?

Well said Nongard, but why would you use it in a hypnosis show where you are trying to convey a element of truth ?

Well in all fairness isn't ALL hypnosis and magic just party tricks? LOL.
Further if you "dress it up differently" it CAN convey an element of hypnosis and can work to get you out of a pretty bad situation if you have too. Is it something that should be used in a standard show? Not if you ask me,BUT like ALL the body magic stuff, dress it up right, and it can save your life. Keep you from having to walk off stage and say, "Sorry folks some nights it just does not work" or "sorry you only have 13 people here we can't do ANYTHING. It is a tool in the tool box, and needs to be treated as such. Right tool, right job.

Ild rather walk off. I would be booked to do a hypnosis show. Not provide "party games".
Or offer some mentalism which would be a much better alternative. |

Walk off huh?
Do mentalism huh? Seems as if the first is a horrid alternative, the second is STILL not what they paid for, and the chair thing, as I said dressed up right, and not as the ONLY thing done can be passed off as a hypnosis show. But high and mighty works well when your not actually doing stage shows any more. Pretty easy to say when you don't do them any more to pontificate on what you would and would not do. But yet again without ever seeing it, without knowing how it can be applied, you still have yet another negative opinion about something. No shock I should say Shrink. Didn't you get banned under that name for that sort of behavior in the first place? LOL.

Walking off in NEVER an alternative. Unless of course, you NEVER want to work aqain. There are a zillion performers working at Wal-Mart, etc. becasue that is exactly what they did - not deliver the products/show.
I'm with Danny on this. Although I have never seen this trick, I can see how a little woo-woo could make it pretty *** interesting AND funny. And how an audience would all want a chance to "try" that. And so, for those wierd situations, that certainly don't come often, this would be an pretty good way to save the day... Richard

I am not disagreeing with either of you. I am only saying what I would rather do.
I am sure you both could do something worthwhile I'ld rather not. Depending upon the venue I would rather refund the money and cancel. I have only ever "walked off" twice. Once when at a private party where I had full cans of beer whizz past my head in the pre-talk. Another where I was told before I started that no one in the private club wanted hypnotised but they were going into the street and bar next door to see if they could find someone that would agree to be hypnotised. In both cases I didn't like the people and was happy to leave. If I was still doing shows perhaps I might see it differently. I am sure you both could pull something out of it. I've done my share of really tough venues and stuck them out and pulled it off. Nowadays can't be really bothered. |

Those shows were lost before you even stepped on the stage. I can imagine it being a good alternative to walk off.
I am speaking in terms of theater shows. NOT private parties. I don't do the home party market, so I can not speak about it.

It wasn't a home party. It was for Butlins holiday camp. But not for the tourists for the staff. They were awful I can't believe they dealt with holiday makers.
The other was a Golf club notorious for snobbery and thinking they are better than average people. |

Although cheesy, here's an idea of how some people get a lot of mileage out of it
I saw a mentalist from ireland do this, had a great message. |

Here in Taiwan, I've seen it presented in variety shows as a straight gag with no illusion of trance and I've seen it presented as part of a "qigong" demonstration with a lot of flair about passing of energy and the like. It was extremely effective in both contexts.
I would not use it for the same reason I don't use any of the full body catalepsy bits . . . 1) there is too great a risk of back injury (even more danger of injury with the multiple person tests) and 2) it's not actually a demonstration of hypnosis other than perhaps confidence to trust yourself to do it, the stability is based upon simple physics (same with bull body catalepsy type human bridge effects). All the best, Brian
