My local ring has several "Members at Large", but I'm not sure I know what they are suppose to do or how to become one. I was told there is a limit to how many "Members at Large" a ring can have. Is it a fire code or something like that?

No, it's not because too many big people are in the room...it might be people who do not live in your area but still wanted to be a part of your ring...
That is just a guess... |

As I understand it, a member-at-large is generally a member elected or appointed to a Ring's leadership council to serve as a direct representative of the general membership. For example, in addition to the usual slate of officers, a large Ring may choose to elect a member-at-large for every 25 members to insure that the interests of those members are considered by the council. The MALs are usually tasked with tracking & promoting participation, personal needs, requests, hospital visits and interests of the members they represent; making it easier to manage a large, active Ring.
Since you don't want more chiefs than braves, you limit the number of MALs to a representative percentage of the club. That said, I believe you and Terry were probably thinking of associate or unaffiliated I.B.M. members - national members who aren't directly associated with any particular Ring. Welcoming associate members is a great way to increase membership...if they join. Occasionally, these members will sit in the back of the room, contribute little, pay no local dues and never join the Ring. For this reason, some Rings will limit the number or type of meetings an associate member can attend without joining. Hope this answers your question, Felix.
