The real issue here for the most part is how large a role magic plays in your life and how the rest of the family views it.
At our house, the battle is over. The phone and answering machine sit on a nicely draped suitcase table. The night stand next to the bed is a trunk of props. The hallway closet is just costume pieces and the two organizer carry-alls have the surround sound woofer on them. However, my wife's ever growing collection of musical instruments is met with equal space, importance and tolerance. Good luck and remember...pack small and play big!
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

I make custom-designed roll around closets for magic storage. These were based on the clothes closet in my bedroom when I was a kid. There is a bottom large space which holds a stool and a sit down performance table. I used a typewriter table that had fold up wings. I then opened a hall door with a full length mirror.
Now it is a cabinet on wheels that can be pushed in a corner. A full length mirror on the inside of the door, multiple pull out shelves and drawers keep a variety of props available for convenient practice and storage without burying things under each other. I can also wire it for lights and sound for radio or DVD/VCR watching. It is easy to close up and move out of the way or work out of for a few minutes where it sits. It locks and keeps dust off your props. My gig briefcase sits on one shelf so it is always ready. Economy models are available in Melamine to high end models in cherry, oak and walnut. Kirk Grodske |

Great ideas and we really need someone developing storage cases just for magicians, I just a big trunk for most of my props, a whole bookshelf for books and videos and a lot of little briefcases for decks of cards.

Well, I inherited this house, see...?
Actually, I use the bottom cupboard of a bookcase in my office, a photographer's bag, the upper, right hand drawer in my desk and a small bookcase with a door on it for my props. Books are all OVER the house, of course... Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Ebay is going to help out a bit, after the move.
I recently got an old-time traveling magicians trunk for my birthday from one of our neighbors. They re-lined the inside with red felt and nice brass trim, and painted the outside black again and re-did the steel strapping in gold. Turn of the century, and looks mint. It also matches my street table which has a black mat and gold trim and fringe. (Not the cheap Mak one.) The table and cups, and bag, will remain out for display. It will hold everything except my street stuff and table, and escapology suitcase when I'm done. I have a nice oak bookcase for books/DVDs.

My books and magazines are kept in a bookcase. (Where else would they be?)
My props, mats and accessories live in a huge old packing trunk. This very trunk served as my girlfriend's bed as an infant, while her parents were carting her around Montserrat doing medical work. From the removal of voodoo curses to hyperactive baby storage, this is a trunk with some stories to tell. Cy |

I have found that fishing tackle boxes are outstanding for carrying a number of items. There are movable partitions, a top access area and enough room to keep just about any close up items snug and secure. The only problem is when I go in to work carrying these I get questions from passers by about how the fishing is today.

Storage is indeed a problem. Lucy and I have about 4,000 square feet of magic storage. Part of it is the finished attic of the house. We have a formal rehearsal room with lights, curtains, remote controlled music, and video. Behind the curtain are closets with shelves of labeled plastic boxes (think Rubber Maid) that range from 12-58 quart capacities each. These boxes contain supply items like cards, silks, wands, dove harnesses, balloons, blank guns, flash paper, etc. At the far end of the room are racks for wardrobe, costumes, hats, shoes, etc.
Upstairs are complete tricks (like miser’s dream), large illusions, box magic, PA systems, tables, extra bases, portable curtains, load items, glass items, coin tricks and extra coins (regular and gimmicked), and foot lockers of items like cups and balls, sponge tricks, canes, etc. The labeled plastic box system is used every where. We have a real library built into the house and loads of books. Yet we keep a pile of books in the bedroom for whatever we are currently reading and researching. Rice’s Silk books never leave my bedroom. We also have a room in another house on the property. There we store things like sword baskets, and large box tricks, screens, suspensions, and extra curtains. The plastic boxes work well. Inside the boxes everything is bagged separately in Ziploc bags. Some are complete multiple setups like for my rope routine, which have an 8’ piece of rope, shears and a rubber band. Other items like mismade flags, 20th century silks, etc. are done the same. That way they are “show” ready. We only have to pick colors that go in that show. The plastic boxes are water, mouse and insect proof. You never know where they will have to go or be stored for a gig. I think mice get into theaters before the people. Outdoor shows have their own set of hazards. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I found some nice aluminum closeup style cases at Gander Mountain. This is a hunt/fish/camp store.
They are gun boxes but look professional and very good with foam inside to cut slots out like someone has already mentioned. |

I tend to keep stuff all over the house (Neatly and tidily organised of course).
My books are in a large bookcase, Children's Props are in two roll on tables, close up magic in three small cases measing about 30 cm by 24cm by 11 cm, cabaret act in its box together with 'Wayne Dobson' table - so it's self contained, and stuff that aren't in acts but I mess with in drawers and cupboards upstairs, and in my office, Cheers, Brian.

At home, everything's in two large locking cabinets.
On the road, the whole act packs into two Coleman 65 gallon coolers, a bag for my suit, and a hardside guitar case. |

I like using a craftsman tool chest in a closet. It is handy, yet out of sight. With all of the different size drawers, you can still use the small tackle boxes side by side to organize within.
On the floor is the "doctor's bag" ready with what is in favor at the moment. MoonBeam |
